Hello All,
I am looking for a feedback on my profile to MBA schools this upcoming cycle. I am an international candidate from India and am looking for scholarships while applying.
My profile is
B Tech in Computer Science Engineering from Shiv Nadar Univeristy, 2015 - CGPA - 6.6
I have been working for the past 57 months in Fermat Education, an Online Education Firm as a Product Developer, current designation is Head of Product Development. I started as a Content Creator, Then worked on website design and creation, then worked in Search Engine Optimization, then involved in the product development cycle. For the past one year, I have also been involved in Product Strategy and Sales. My diverse work experience is mainly because I was given the opportunity to work in all the fields and also because it is a startup. My question is - how will working in a startup (one with lesser brand unlike MNCs) and working in multiple roles instead of having a specialization affect my chances in top 35 ranked US b-schools? Also, post admission, how good are my chances at product development / Gen Management roles in Tech companies?

I wrote the GMAT back in March and secured 710 - Q49 and V36.

Thanks for your help!

Hi arvindb14, as you know the competition from fellow applicants from India is quite tough at the top MBA programs. I actually like your diverse work experience and track record of promotions, but you're right that a startup name can be an obstacle vs. a well known multinational brand. I recommend that you showcase your startup's credibility (does it have brand name clients, awards, or other signals of strength/legitimacy) and impact in its sector, along with your own role in making good things happen.

Looking at the rest of your profile, your GPA is on the low side vs. the strongest applicants. Lower GPAs can be mitigated by a great performance on the GMAT. A 710 is a good start, but especially if you are looking for scholarship money and you have hurdles in your application, I'd suggest a retake to try to post a higher score. When you apply, do it in R1, include names in the lower half of the top 35 and target multiple schools where your GMAT strongly outperforms the average to maximize your chances of success (especially if you are hoping for scholarship money). I can't speak to the hiring picture - that's a question that's out of our scope -- especially since it's years away and in a very uncertain economy and visa situation right now...but you might look for schools with STEM visas to enhance your hire-ability when the time comes (if you can join with that initial visa status taken care of, you are likely to open up more job options).

Best of luck!

Hi Julie-Anne,
Thanks a lot for the detailed evaluation of my profile. I will definitely follow your suggestions while applying to b-schools and also hope to write the GMAT again.
