Hey,

You have decent relevant work experience, but academically, you have a low GPA. Speaking of your GMAT score of 690, I would really recommend you to score 710+, that would definitely work in your favour as that will further illustrate your academic capabilities, allowing you to apply to most of the top colleges. While your grades do play an important part, your extracurricular activities and your other endeavours matter as well because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles. That said, your volunteering and leadership roles all showcase your strong interest in developing your profile holistically by highlighting your ability to take up initiatives, impact others and to empathize with other people. B-schools are looking for applicants that are future leaders and such experiences and qualities strengthen your application. To further improve your profile you could take up certifications to bolster your extracurriculars and build a holistic profile.

As far as your work experience goes, since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 5+ years of work experience would put you at par with other applicants. In order to stand out from the crowd, you most certainly should focus on your GMAT and major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Since you have some big brands like BCG in your work experience, these will definitely benefit you and showcase an equally competitive profile.

Furthermore, if you want to work in strategy consulting, you must relate your previous experiences with your post-MBA goals. Because INSEAD is a top B-School, you must plan ahead of time to secure a spot in their MBA programme.
Moving on to the school you are targeting, I’d say you have a decent chance of getting accepted into the top school. Since Insead falls under the dream category you’d have a 40-50% chance of getting admitted. So, to increase your chances in INSEAD focus on the things I mentioned above.
On this note, to prepare a strong application, to meet the upcoming deadlines right on time, you can check our comprehensive all-in-one solution that has helped thousands of applicants get into their dream schools including schools like HEC, INSEAD and LBS!

I believe you would do well at INSEAD.
Your ECs paint a balanced picture, and your academic accomplishments are excellent. Singapore is a multicultural city-state. You should be able to show that you are driven to expand your network at INSEAD if you properly highlight your experience dealing with expatriates in Singapore, both at your job and at the international organisation where you volunteer. I'm not really sure what your particular responsibilities are at your organisation or what effect your work has. Make sure you have sufficient evidence of a career progression trajectory and your capacity for comprehensive stakeholder management.
Your short-term career plan would need to be more detailed. It would take some thought and a convincing narrative to demonstrate how a business development objective in the IT industry matches with your past experience and long-term objectives. Additionally, you should be more clear about your long-term goals and outline the precise issues your experience has shown you need to address with your social enterprise.
Thinking about what you want to do in the long run, say, 10-15 years from now, and why would be a better technique.
Then, create a plan A and a plan B that would assist you choose the appropriate collection of talents as you progress toward your long-term goals.

Hi Amouo,

thank you for sharing your profile.

You have a well-rounded profile so I like your chances. I like how your career has evolved and that you co-founded an investment advisory boutique firm. I am sure this will be a great source of stories for the essays. If I may ask, what happened to this firm?

Your goals are aligned with your experience so they seem pretty genuine and realistic.

The EC are also good and combine sports and giving back.

My main concern is your age. As you may know, the class average is usually between 26 and 32, and this is at the time the program starts. You can take a look at the Class Profile for the MBA'22D Class here.

https://gmatclub.com/forum/insead-mba-2 ... 79477.html

If you are currently 33, that means that by the time the program starts, assuming you apply to the Aug 2023 intake, you'll be at least 34. So, this will place you well outside the age range.

This is by no means a complete deal breaker, though. I have actually worked with several Cameroonians about your age who were successfully accepted to INSEAD. But you will need to show that you have accomplished more than a typical 27-28-year-old applicant. In this regard, your entrepreneurship experience and your current role in which you manage a team will help. So, make sure to leverage these well in your application.

Also, I know you're already considering retaking the GMAT, but it is important that you increase your score. 720 would be a great score, but if you get 700-710, it would also be perfectly possible to get accepted.

I would love to take a look at your resume, so feel free to email it to me at alex@arleeconsulting.com.

Warm regards
Alex

Hey,

As you are preparing for MBA, I would really to tell you that for Top B-Schools like Insead, Columbia, LBS, you really have to give a GMAT.
You have not mentioned anything about GMAT so I am considering you must not have taken that yet. So, I would recommend you to start preparing for GMAT.
GRE is more focused on MS Degree, so it really doesn’t matter in your case as you are going for MBA.

So, in my opinion, the GMAT appears to be required for a business programme abroad. Especially in a country like the United States, where a Masters degree means much more than a degree. Some major institutes, however, do not require you to submit a GMAT score. They are, of course, fewer in number. Working graduates who do not want to put in the extra effort of taking a standardised test prefer these institutes. And, by far, the educational quality at any of the aforementioned business schools is exceptional. In fact, Kellogg offers an Executive MBA programme that does not require a GMAT score.
Here are the best schools across countries that don't require a GMAT score:
USA
    University of Seattle
    Adelphi University
    California Miramar University
    Canada
    University of Regina
    Brock University
    University of Saskatchewan
UK
    University of Leeds
    King's College London
    University of Manchester
Now, these institutes might not require a GMAT score but there are other requirements that you must fulfil like a minimum bachelors' GPA, IELTS/TOEFL Score etc.
You should check your overall profile and get an idea if you match all the other requirements if you wish to skip the GMAT.
Other than that you have a decent profile, and Academically, you have a good marks which showcases your academic power. While your grades do play an important part, your extracurricular activities and your other endeavours matter as well because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles.

Not only this your work experience also plays an important role in your application process. As far as your work experience goes, since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 3+ years of work experience would be decent. In order to stand out from the crowd, you most certainly should focus on your GMAT and major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Since you have some big brands like Dell in your work experience, this will definitely benefit you and showcase an equally competitive profile.

Extracurricular + Achievements: Your extracurriculars are decent. It definitely showcases your hard-working skills as you have won several medals.
You just need to make a killer application highlighting all your skills explaining why you are the perfect candidate.
Make your application unique so that it stands out of the crowd.

If you would like, we can help you with essays and SOPs and other application processes.

Hi Valm1994:

Yes, you will definitely be a candidate for INSEAD.

We didn't see any extracurricular/community achievements. Can you share? Those will only help your profile.

The focus for you moving forward should be on executing the application. The essays for INSEAD are extremely important and in-depth. You will also need to have a good CV/resume and excellent recommendation letters. Lastly, demonstrating interest in the INSEAD MBA program is critical.

If you can pull all that off, I am confident you'll be given a serious look.

Please reach out to my team if you are interested in hiring a consultant and would benefit from a free consultation.

Hi,Valm1994,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to say your profile looks a bit brief on the surface. Now, coming to your GRE, backing a score of 325 is great; the difference in an additional 5 to 10 points can be easily coped with technical prowess and some stellar leadership examples throughout your tenure! Also, I would suggest you add your GPA alongside your overall statistics during your graduation and any other courses, certifications, and academic accolades to back your academic front.

About your work experience, we'd like to know more about your roles & responsibilities, critical projects, and some stellar examples of leadership, decision-making, and excellence in the field throughout your long tenure. Moreover, adding any promotions, you may have received or about any international experience would definitely help you explore new horizons to start an interesting conversation with the adcom! For a deeper understanding, I suggest you go through our article on How to demonstrate your fit to your target business school!, this would help provide insights and create a stronger profile with the right details to add.

Coming to ECAs, you need to add at least some of them; even some hobbies will do! After that, try to give a brief account of your contribution, the challenges faced, leadership roles played, the impact generated, and the relevant skills developed through your ECAs so that it doesn't sound just like participation! About your post-MBA goal, it's' a common answer. However, since you belong to a non-conventional industry, it would depend on how well you can interlink your past experiences with the school values and, if possible, try to segregate them into short-term and long-term goals!

Overall, you have a decent profile. However, INSEAD is a top B-school; hence we suggest you go through our blog on How to get into INSEAD Business School? You will get some insights! Furthermore, I would suggest applying in round 1 as being from a non-conventional background could help secure a seat as B-schools tend to add diversity to their classroom in the early rounds. That's all for now; if you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to your target B-schools; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi AG,
Shimri from ARINGO here.
I hope you don't mind me being blunt. you have a very impressive career to date. academically, professionally and other activities!
But, your admissions chances at INSEAD are very low.
You are over qualified for full-time MBAs, and INSEAD (and other programs) will rarely consider a candidate with more than 12 years of professional experience

What should you do?
1. Watch my video on MBA Over 30 (senior MBA candidate with more than 10y of professional experience: https://youtu.be/DFVqE7WMinM).
2. If you are nearly ready to take the GMAT, then take it. although some senior programs do not require it at all.
3. Apply to INSEAD, what do I know :).
4. Consider other programs. I have a couple in mind for you both in the US and EU.
5. Talk to me... (I am always on shimriw@ARINGO.com) and hopefully, I can help further and assist you in getting accepted to some top MBA programs.

Good luck AG, and again, I hope it was ok I was blunt and straightforward regarding your chances at INSEAD

Considering all of the above, I think what I would most want to hear your opinions on is - with what GMAT score would you advise me to retake it and apply in R2? I am am positive that I will be able to build a coherent, compelling story through my essays and my LOR, while you have the rest of the info up here. Of course, I am very happy to hear any other input on my chanches and improvement areas as well!

Your target score for INSEAD MiM should be around a 700. If you end up with a 680, I think you'll still be fine but it won't be quite the slam dunk as crossing that 700 threshold. If you look at the INSEAD MiM website, the middle 80% score between 620 and 730.

https://www.insead.edu/master-programmes/mim

Of course, that doesn't tell you much about the median or mean, so figure it skews towards the higher end. MiM programs are becoming more competitive so to seal the deal try to get closer to that upper part of the range.

Hope that helps,

Thank you! My aim is definitely 700 but will have limited time after my test date to go continue studying, hence my question in what scenario I might be fine.

A follow up question, if I end up between 650-680, would you in that case as well advise me to redo it?

Thanks in advance!
