Work experience (at matriculation):
data analytics and strategy making: 3.5years, 2 organizations (in top 350 of 'Fortune Global 500'; both are international financial services, the latter employer also being in top 3 'India's best employer' according to 'great place to work')- 1 promotion

Short term goal: Management consulting (for wider industry strategy making experience; MBB preferably)would suggest you try to be more creative in listing some other strong consulting firms when applying as everyone says MBB
Long term goal: Leadership role in consulting/establish education consultancy in India

Hi saloneegiim,

thanks for sharing your profile.

I think it is very strong. You have a very successful career with proven fast progression. Also, having worked for Accenture Strategy also strengthens your profile. You have extensive international experience which, as you may know, is very important for INSEAD.

Just a few observations:

(1) Given the competitiveness of the Indian applicant pool, try to target higher than 710 at GMAT. +730 to be on the safer side.

(2) More than your Extra-Curriculars, INSEAD is interested in your Extra-Professional activities, i.e., what do you do after work? There is even an essay for this in the application.

(3) Round 2 deadline for the Jan 2019 intake is May 2nd (i.e. two weeks from now). Are you targeting this round? If so, have you started working on the application? When are you taking the GMAT?

For a more detailed evaluation of your profile, feel free to PM me or to contact me directly at alex@ruizlee.es.

Good luck!
Alex

saloneegiim,
1) Strong profile, goals missing (for your profile, you will need a unique sort of goal that fits well with your profile)
2) Also not clear, what you personally want from an MBA. Do you really think you should go for one? (Ask yourself this question)
3) Given you already have an MBA from an IIM, You will need to prove you can benefit well from an additional MBA.

Think about these.

Hey guys,

I have a bit of an unusual profile with zero MNC or consulting experience -- instead 100% startup experience. Not sure if it's a good fit or not, but I'm curious about opinions.

Swedish male
Age: 29

Undergrad Information:
Journalism ( :-) ), 3.5 GPA

GMAT:
Haven't taken, but let's assume 700 for the sake of this argument. Strong in verbal.
TOEFL: 117

Work experience (at matriculation):
+ Business Manager at Singaporean health tech startup (1 year, based in Vietnam)
+ Started own company in digital health, failed miserably (1.5 years, Vietnam + Sweden, raised around 100K)
+ Marketing Specialist for SaaS (6 months, Bangkok + China)
+ Marketing Manager (IT/outsourcing startup, 1 year, Vietnam)

In total around 3 years' international experience in developing markets.

Community and others:
+ Research associate for social marketing program (Social marketing here refers to social impact marketing.)
+ Helping revamp social marketing course for leading social marketing center

Post MBA goals:
I need to work on this. I want to work in social impact, and I was debating an MBA or an MPH. But I believe in the intersection between business and development and that it's key for success, so I'm thinking therefore of pursuing an MBA. I'll flesh this out if I 100% decide to pursue it. Already got admitted to top MSc in public health, but thinking of postponing.

Why MBA: Develop leadership/management skills, develop industry network, learn more about social impact and sustainable development in relation to business.

Anything else?
+ Helped raise few 100K for startup
+ Spearheaded brining business from $0 to profitability in online sales in around 6 months
+ Spearheaded successful admission to top Scandinavian healthcare accelerator (6% admission)
+ English and Swedish fluent
+ Vietnamese and French intermediate

Any input welcome! :)

Hello Cbb

First impression is er... impressive :-)

1. Academics- Not stellar, but checks the box. 710+ score is good enough to give confidence that you can handle the academic rigor. This also means that you will have to up your game in the essays.
2. Work Experience- looks good on paper. Would help to understand more of your achievements at work, as that is what the AdCom will be interested to hear from you.
3. Clarity of Goals- Not very clear here. I believe you need to go deeper. You wish to build products and work in strategy, but how does you past experience help you transition into such roles?
4. Diversity- Looks decent. Given strong application/essays B-school would love to have you as you could bring a fresh perspective. Knowledge of languages is a big plus!
5. Leadership- Not much information here. Will need to understand more.
6. Communication- Evident only from Essays and interviews.

With limited information, all I can summarize is that you have good potential, will need differentiate from other applicants and bring it out strongly in your essays.

Hello PBK

Definitely an interesting profile.

Acads look strong. No brainer here- a GMAT of 700+ will really help. TOEFL is good to go.
Work ex is a plus- with start-up and international experience. Your strong work ex will require you to give compelling reasons to WHY MBA?
Post MBA goals- Without this application is not weak, but incomplete. Cannot comment with current information.
Leadership potential- seems hidden between the lines, will need to write well on this.
Communication- not much info here, your work on essays will have to prove this.
Diversity- certainly your biggest strength in my humble opinion. Play well here. Tell the school why you are a great fit but will bring a lot of unique perspectives to the class.

Overall you look a strong candidate on paper, but to give a detailed feedback need answers to these 3- 1. You seem to be doing well, why do you need an MBA 2. Final GMAT scores 3. Clearer Post MBA goals.

All the best.

ravi1608 I'm afraid not, we have found the Clear Admit INSEAD interview guide "sample accounts" pages to contain all the questions asked. Its $20 on the CA site. Please let me know of any questions asked that are not in the sample accounts! And if possible, a full list for both interviews.

Hi,

I am desperately look for some help and guidance. I will share a brief about my profile and then will mention the places where I am stuck.

GMAT - 700 (Q50, V34, AWA-5, IR-8). Work ex - 47 months as on date.

Grad & Work Ex:
I have done my graduation in Fashion Technology from National Institute of Fashion Technology. My college is regarded as the best fashion college in the country and is among the top 3 colleges in Asia. Right now I am working with the biggest apparel organisation in the country. I have reached middle management role in a very short duration and currently heading pan India operations team of my brand.

Profile
Qualitatively I have a strong profile. I have worked hard to build my profile over the last few years. I am a national level athlete and a national level quiz medalist. I have led teams during my college days and have also worked for couple of spiritual and non-for-profit organisations in the past.

Reasons for MBA
Though I have got good success in the initial years of my career, a graduate degree won't be sufficient to take me to senior level roles in future. An MBA at this stage will definitely help in making my profile much stronger and making me more suitable for leadership role. A masters degree will also make me financially more stable.

Post MBA plans:
Post MBA I want to work in roles of Brand Management with specialization in the fields of Strategy and Marketing. I am open to industries outside the fashion industry though I wouldn't mind coming back to this industry.

Dilemma
I am slightly unsure whether I should apply to INSEAD with this score. Also, with the current geo-political situation, I am slightly unsure whether it is viable to invest such a huge amount on an MBA. Scholarship seems like a distant dream at this stage.

Inherently I am a very optimistic person and I always look for opportunities of growth and learning. But I am getting slightly skeptical at this stage because of the cost involved. There is absolutely no margin for error in this case. Even after 4 attempts, i have not been able to reach a score on which I can apply to INSEAD confidently.

The biggest question on my mind is - What all to do to make my candidature more strong for INSEAD.

Kindly share your inputs.

Hi GoodGuy,

thank you for sharing your profile.

I always recommend Indian applicants to have a GMAT score at least 20-30 points above INSEAD's average. This being said, such score would not guarantee you admission, and your 700 score will not disqualify you.

If retaking GMAT is a possibility, please go ahead and do so. But at the same time, please put all of your efforts in submitting a strong application (i.e. CV, Essays, LoRs).

By the way, do you have any international experience?

For a more detailed discussion, feel free to PM me or email me directly at alex@ruizlee.es.

Good luck!

Other extra-curricular

Volunteering/Social work
a. As mentioned above, I worked full time at an NGO after my undergrad, although for only 3 months

Hello GoodGuy

I work with many NIFT-ians to help them get admission to top B-Schools including ISB/IIM & INSEAD.
Most such applicants tend to have a 700+ score (something that is usually expected from Indians in general)
A 700 will not break your chances and higher score will not guarantee it, but will surely improve your chances.
Otherwise, yours is a diverse profile- something that NIFT-ians truly benefit from. However it will all boil down to your application, essays and what stories you tell.
Regarding the question on geo-political angle is a larger discussion and will depend on you specific career plans.

If you wish to have free initial consultation you can call me on the undersigned-

Hi, please review my profile for INSEAD MBA.

Nationality: Indian
Gender: male, Age - 30
GMAT: 700 – Q 48, V 39, IR 7, AWA – awaited (First attempt) - Indians are usually expected to have higher GMAT scores- will depend on the target schools and overall strength of the profile though.

Education
Postgrad: 2 year Full-time MBA in Marketing (Technically a Post Grad Diploma in Management, PGDM) from a top 20 B-School in India, GPA – 7.14/10. CAT score to get in – 94 percentile. CAT is Indian counterpart of GMAT. Along with the regular MBA questions- be prepared to give a compelling reason to WHY 2nd MBA? This is very crucial to your application.

Undergrad: Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from an average Indian university, Score – 65.3% (not sure how to convert)- Avg Acads and Avg GMAT- will have to compensate in other areas of the profile.

School – 80% in both senior and high school

Work Experience – 5 years 5 months
1. Deputy Manager - Bid Management for a leading Indian IT Outsourcer (3 years)
This is post my MBA. It’s a Business Development/Pre-sales role. I manage end-to-end bid lifecycles of RFPs ($10-50 million) related to Enterprise IT services for leading MNCs. The role comprises of managing the bid process, managing internal stakeholders and the proposal deliverables, customer requirement analysis, developing IT solutions according to customer’s needs and according to standardized frameworks, undertaking solution discussion/due-diligence meetings/workshops with customer stakeholders at various stages of the bid, managing customer visits to Service Delivery Centres, managing product demos, doing the pricing for the proposal based on various pricing models, create solution presentation and the proposal documents, doing market research on IT trends etc.

Worked on RFPs from customers in various sectors - Telecom, Manufacturing, Banking, Media, Public Services and Energy and Utilities etc.

International experience – This is in the form of short-term visits to client location for meetings, as I mentioned above.

My friend you've mostly listed duties. What has been your Career Progress and what have been your key Achievements. The colleges will be more interested in that.

2. Software Engineer - another leading Indian IT Outsourcer (2 years 3 months)
This is kind of a usual “Indian IT Software Development” experience. Worked as a Developer to implement Software Enhancements and Maintenance of software applications and products for leading Hi-Tech and Telecom clients

Indian. IT. Male. This is the biggest pool from India. How are you planning to differentiate your candidature from other such applicants?

3. Program Coordinator for a leading Indian NGO – 3 months
Short stint at an NGO just after my undergrad. I was actively involved in coordination of the NGO’s educational initiatives in different northern states of India. Did Recruitment and Training (English/Computers/Soft Skills) of the Trainers (who would then go on to teach the children), content management etc.
Looks Good. Elaborate more on this. But when was this? And would you be continuing this sometime in the future?

4. MBA Summer Internship– 3 months (haven’t counted this in)
Summer project involved formulating a Go-To-Market Strategy for a portfolio company of a private equity firm. This portfolio company is in the private tuitions business.

Management related extra-curricular
1. Published Ivey Case Study on Ecommerce in collaboration with B-school professor and few other batchmates
2. Management related Competitions/Presentations – Won a corporate sponsored case study analysis competition, participated in other Indian Business schools management fests, was part of managing my college’s management fest.
3. Short Term Projects – One for a Mid-cap Indian IT firm and another for an Indian Cafe chain. Both related to marketing/brand mgmt.
4. Certification in ‘Strategic Management and Leadership’, conducted by the B-School through a professional intermediary

Sound interesting. But will need to explore this further and find depth in these stories

Other extra-curricular

Volunteering/Social work
a. As mentioned above, I worked full time at an NGO after my undergrad, although for only 3 months
b. During my second job I used to volunteer on weekends for a local NGO. Used to teach kids and helped the NGO with its software database.
c. Recently engaged in weekend volunteering (again, teaching kids) organised by my company.
Sports
An avid player of a racquet sport with multiple achievements in the sport over more than 16 years. Recently represented my company at an inter-corporate tournament and won gold.
Music
Level 2 Violinist, ABRSM 2017. Working towards higher levels now.

Same comment as above.

Post-MBA Goals:
Would like to move into strategy consulting
How will an MBA help? What colleges are you shortlisting?

Apart from this, not much information to judge your chances (especially with no target schools listed)

Hello Friends!

Requesting for a profile evaluation as I prepare to apply for CBS (open to J term also), Stern, INSEAD, Boston College & Cornell this June 2019. 5 of my uncle’s and cousins have taken their MBA at Columbia and heavily recommend so it is my top choice. Followed by Stern and INSEAD.

Age: 25 upon matriculation w 4 years experience.

Degree: Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management from a Top 3 Local University.
Was elected College President for the college of business in my senior year, leading an organization of 80 student officers. Results: Awarded Best College Government in the University for that year.

GPA: 3.17/4 - Graduated Top 11% in my college and number 2/55 in my course.

Career:
Job #1: (18 months)
- Management Trainee Program at a Fortune 500 Consumer Goods company. (top 150)

Completed an 18 month management trainee program with stints in field sales, corp finance, demand planning, brand marketing and trade marketing.

Highlights include:

Navigated high turnover to land one of my brands as the fastest growing brand in the company by the time i left, peaked with 3 straight months of record revenue. Current:
- Entrepreneur. Founded an e-commerce shoe brand with two friends from college, first official year of operations tracking to do just under $100,000 in gross revenue (operating in a 3rd world economy). Although admittedly with lots of (expensive) stumbles along the way as we handle all aspects of the business from product development and supply to web design and digital marketing.

- Also do an E-Commerce Management and consulting for several other local SME fashion businesses.

Extra Curricular:
- previously mentioned College President

- National Model UN New York in 2015 - delegation won Honorable Mention
- Vice President of an NGO that seeks to provide equal opportunity and quality job placement for top students from rural/local universities outside the country’s top 3.

International Experience:
-Model UN at school.
-At work, given that i was in MNC i worked hand in hand with my counter parts in APAC. Reporting to managers of 3 different ethnicities during the course of my stay and leading the PH Home Care team (half of which were based in SG).

MBA GOAL:
- shift to the business side of fashion and luxury goods industry as well as shore up my financial and product supply competencies.
- Long term return to the Philippines and grow my brand to become an international player.

It is good to get a first-hand feedback of a college from friends and family. However, make sure you select the college looking at your career goals. If the career goals and not very realistic as per the college, then your application may get rejected or you may face trouble finding the right oppotrunity.

Background:

Dual Citizen: Spanish and Filipino. Born and raised in the Philippines. 3 years MNC Marketing.
Age: 25 upon matriculation w 4 years experience.
Background definitely speaks of some diversity. Work ex is just slightly under the average, so make sure your essays bring about your maturity and achievements.

Degree: Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management from a Top 3 Local University.
Was elected College President for the college of business in my senior year, leading an organization of 80 student officers. Results: Awarded Best College Government in the University for that year.

GMAT: 670 (studying for a retake this May)- For your target schools plan to improve this to 700+. Since your GPA is good but not stellar, a high GMAT will give the AdCom confidence that you will be able to handle the academic pressure.
GPA: 3.17/4 - Graduated Top 11% in my college and number 2/55 in my course.

Career:
Job #1: (18 months)

The university is more interested to know your achievements and what stories are you planning to tell. What were your key successes? Failures? What did you learn from them? Why has your experience led you to think that you need an MBA>

Job #2 (13 months):
- Brand Manager at a Fortune 500 Consumer Goods company (Top 50) for the top dish detergent brand in country and the world’s number one air freshener brand.

Sounds interesting. You certainly have points worth talking about. Make sure you select the right stories and combine your past experience and your future plans with a need for an MBA

Extra Curricular:
- previously mentioned College President
- Amateur Boxing - competitive, former national archery champion (high school) Photography, Fashion and Shoe Design.
- National Model UN New York in 2015 - delegation won Honorable Mention
- Vice President of an NGO that seeks to provide equal opportunity and quality job placement for top students from rural/local universities outside the country’s top 3.

Though these look interesting on paper, it would be great to know why you are interested in these activities, what are your accomplishments and what sort of impact have you made.

International Experience:
-Model UN at school.
-At work, given that i was in MNC i worked hand in hand with my counter parts in APAC. Reporting to managers of 3 different ethnicities during the course of my stay and leading the PH Home Care team (half of which were based in SG).

MBA GOAL:
- shift to the business side of fashion and luxury goods industry as well as shore up my financial and product supply competencies.- You are already in this field and apparently doing good. Why MBA? How will it help you reach your goal? Why can't you reach your goal the way you are already progressing or via alternate routes (job change, specific training)? On a side note, Stern has a MBA program focusing on Luxury/Fashion- keep than in mind, also NY is a great location for this field.
Also make sure your expectations are realistic for your targeted universities. Have people realized such goals in the past. If the track record of a university does not support such career progress/transition, your application will look weak- so make sure your research is well done.

- Long term return to the Philippines and grow my brand to become an international player.

To summarize, good profile overall- strengths in terms of work ex and diversity, but certainly look at improving your GMAT.
Plus the reason why you need an MBA is not coming out very strongly so make sure you brainstorm this well.
All the best!

Hi GoodGuy,

I could see INSEAD being a good option for you at least in theory given the electives and student clubs they have on offer for areas such as Luxury Brand Management for example. (Side note: also look at HEC for similar offerings! And they have have certificate in Luxury Strategy. I know not necessarily same as fashion etc but just in case relevant to your interests at all).

The big question being the 700... as others have said, it MAY be fine but all would feel better if a bit higher. At least you'll be a bit more memorable yes given your industry background. AND you've taken it 4 times... that is most people's threshold for being done!! For some I'd recommend a GRE but INSEAD does still slightly prefer GMAT so not as much of an alternative here.

There's no real down side to continuing to try GMAT, so base it upon your timing... how much time you have before the deadline etc. If you want to give it ONE last 'hail mary' shot just in case, maybe work with a private tutor one-to-one for literally a couple weeks max, and/or take a crash course, and do it just in case. If that is too stressful or you don't have time, give it a shot as-is.

If you'd like to speak further at any point feel free to sign up for a free 30 minute consultation at www.mbamission.com/consult. Good luck!

INSEAD PROFILE EVALUATION THREAD: Post all Profile Eval Requests Here!  [#permalink]

New post 14 May 2018, 14:57
Hi all, I am in a bit of a dilemma with my 19J round 3 application which is due about a month from now. I recently took the GMAT and got a pretty poor score of 690 (Q40, V42, IR-7). I was particularly weak in the quant section, but did this with limited prep so think I can improve the score. The only issue is I'm not sure if retaking within the next month before the deadline will be a good use of my time (as opposed to writing my application essays).

My question is: Given my profile below, should I put in an application for round 3 at INSEAD with the 690 score? Or would I be better to try again for a better score and apply in round 4? I don't want to risk that I get rejected in part because of the 690, therefore making it hard to get admitted in future years if I wanted to apply again.

Some of my other stats are below:

Personal:
Age: 28 at time of Application
Gender: Male
Nationality: Australian born, East Asian ethnicity (meet the INSEAD language requirements)

Education:
Undergraduate degrees in commerce and law in Australia. I graduated with first class honours in both degrees

Work experience:
2 years as a corporate M&A lawyer at a global law firm (past role)
2 years as a management consultant, tier-2 firm (Parthenon / ATK / Strategy& / OW) (current role)

Other:
I have reasonably strong (though not exceptional) ECs and leadership activities. Can elaborate on these if you think it would be useful, although I am really looking for a go / no-go response as, if it's a 'no', then I need to cancel my 690 score in the next 2 days.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

Sorry, this is a long one!

Greatly appreciated if you could evaluate my profile.
My biggest concerns are:

1) Age - 31 at matriculation (I know INSEAD tends to be more accepting of older applicants)
2) Changing jobs 1.5 years before expected intake . . . not ideal, but I felt the move was necessary (details below)
3) Not sure how adcom views PR industry. I, too, am skeptical of PR (press events, etc.), but I have been fortunate to build unique experience to directly consult C-suite level on communications strategy, including a current Fortune 500 CEO.

Profile
29 year old American.
Looking to apply for January 2020 intake, so 31 at matriculation.

GPA
3.77 from the University of Washington (Seattle); graduated cum laude and Dean’s List each quarter.
One year direct exchange in Tokyo; all coursework in Japanese

GMAT
Taking next month, but let’s assume 700.
My weakness is quant, but partner has a PhD in mathematics, so I think this is manageable with hardwork.

Work experience
3 years at a mid-sized Japanese trading company (uniquely Japanese concept, but essentially a middleman company) as in account manager for Japanese clients in Japan and overseas. My role was an account manager for Japanese clients in the auto industry (company is well-rounded, but I was place in the auto division), servicing both domestic and global needs including monthly production control, quality control, new project bidding, and developing global network to shift production overseas (travelled extensive to Southeast Asia and North America to exhibit at expos and find new partners).

4 years at a Japanese PR firm (3 years Tokyo; 1 year Beijing), under a major advertising conglomerate and one of Japan’s most prestigious companies. After my previous company, I was burned out from the auto industry (one project can take 5 years) and too much technical work with the manufacturers (I am not an engineer), so I transitioned to communications to work in multiple industries to discover my interests. In Japan my company is the leading PR firm, and part of a larger network that used to be the most desired employer in Japan (until an employee suicide a few years ago). Working for one for overseas offices now, name value is not so high, but in Japan the company is no joke. My job title is “consultant” where my role is account management (approximately 5-10 accounts simultaneously) for Fortune 500 companies, startups and government organizations, and my responsibilities are planning and execution of global communication campaigns (in and out), direct reporting to top management in English, and also serving as the global liaison for our external partners (one being a major French ad agency, whose current CEO is also an INSEAD alum and promoted in their school brochure) and for global clients whose account I do not work on, but for reporting purposes, am occasionally needed (APAC HQ of major blue-chip companies).

A few recently highlights include 1) achieving highest performance for FY17 in history of my division (150% of goal and 300% more than the second highest of my 8 team members, contributing to 60% of our total goal and helping the division exceed target for first time in 3 years . . . I'm second most junior, also, another reason why I decided to leave Japan because there is no consequence for poor performance); 2) In China I recently won the new business development award for MNC and also lead the communications for an M&A announcement between two group companies, responsible for facilitating between the two HQ in U.S. and Japan and producing the final Chinese content。

A few notes about work experience:
1) Technically I quit the Japan office in summer 2017 and was rehired at the Beijing office. The company sponsored my paperwork and all, but salary is in accordance with the local market, much higher than the local staff but still a considerable pay cut compared to Japan. My fiancé recently relocated to Beijing from California, and I spoke considerable Mandarin at the point and had been to China approximately 30 times for business, so I had the itch to leave Japan and try it out.
2) I will leave this Beijing office after 11 months (exactly 4 years including 3 years 1 month in Japan). Ideally I wanted to stick it out through MBA applications and leave later on, but unfortunately I find the company I joined to be unfulfilling (despite being a Japanese company our global HQ is UK, company culture is entirely different, and would rather just work for a Western competitor) and the air pollution is simply too much to bear daily.
3) My new role in HK leverages my experiences from both jobs: manufacturing X communications, but I will have much more responsibility in Asian business development. I was extremely hesitant to change jobs ahead of b-school applications, but strongly felt there was no reason to waste any more time in Beijing when an attractive offer presented itself (my fiancé is also from HK and will be relocating a new university position here). I hope that 1.5 years with most recent employer at matriculation is not a reason to get dinged (searching on LinkedIn at alum, it appears I should be fine).
4) Job promotions – in Japan promotions are 100% based on your age. Aside from being promoted to “lifetime employee”, I do not have any major promotions to my name. However, I believe top communications experience (reporting directly to CMO and CEO of several well-known companies), leading project teams of up to 20 persons, as well as accompanying our CEO for international business trips, demonstrates my leadership

International experience/languages
Japan (7 years work/internship; 1 year for undergrad): complete fluency in Japanese. One of the INSEAD essay prompts is “accomplishment you are most proud of”, here I think I will explain how I was promoted to “lifetime employment status” within my first year as a contract worker on one-year contract (5 years max), becoming the first foreigner in company history.

China (1 year in Beijing for work): advanced mandarin, comfortable holding meetings, writing emails/documents, and conducting research in Chinese. I even hosted in Chinese a media event to announce M&A of two group companies. Still have considerable ways to go to reach same level of command as my Japanese, but will easily satisfy INSEAD language requirements.

Hong Kong (moving to HK in a few weeks where I plan to work 1.5 years for January 2020 intake): my future role is at a Japanese company, and focus on business development in mainland China and APAC.

Additionally, not sure if you get bonus points for French, but I believe even my French would test out of the language requirements, being my first foreign language and having visited France for business numerous times.

Extracurricular activities
2013.1-2013.9 – Tokyo 2020 Olympics Bid – Personally requested by then Tokyo Governor to manage his person social media accounts, disseminating English content to foreign media audiences, to convey Japan’s passion for hosting the games. I was given complete control over the content.

2015-2017 – Young Cannes Lions Competition Japan (PR) – 2015 Bronze medalist (3rd out of 140) and 2016 finalist (5th out of 205); first two-time finalist. For those unfamiliar, it is an idea contest held at the local country level for professionals in the industry under 30 years of age, with the winning group then going to the Cannes festival to compete against other winners. There are 8 different categories (Ad, PR, social media, etc.), and contestants are given 24 hours to make a proposal for a particular issue (human trafficking, #metoo, water conservation, etc.). As a two-time finalist I had to compete approximately 4 weekends/year preparing for the competition, as well as brainstorming sessions for future topics and info sessions for future participants several times throughout the year. I wanted to join this year in China but my CEO vetoed it because she thought it was a waste of time, but may join again next year (last year of eligibility). On a side note, this competition is sponsored by Accenture, IBM, Deloitte and PwC.

Career goals: why INSEAD and why an MBA?

1) INSEAD best positions me to land a job with an MBB firm. As a consultant at a PR firm I had the unique opportunity to work directly and extensively with C-suite level, consulting on communications strategy and stakeholder relations, but I would like to take my career to the next level and transition to management consulting. During my time in Japan I jointly managed a project for the Prime Minister’s Office with MBB, and in Beijing we share an office with another MBB firm, so this exposure has me yearning for something better.

2) If the MBB route is not viable, I will still pursue other consulting roles or a senior position in marketing, and want the MBA on my resume to make my candidacy more competitive. During my recent job search in Hong Kong I came across several attractive marketing positions that explicitly stated MBA preferred. However, if the INSEAD is not an option, I am comfortable pursuing a part-time MBA at HKUST or HKU to fulfill this goal.

Thanks!

Hi queensbridge,

I'm sorry if this answer comes a bit late. I would recommend you to apply on Round 3 with your current GMAT score.

I always prefer submitting a strong application (i.e. Resume, Essays, LoRs) with a not-so-high GMAT score than submitting a not-so-strong application with a high GMAT score.

If INSEAD believes your application is strong and the only weak point is your GMAT score, your application could be put on hold and you could be asked to retake it. In case of then getting a higher GMAT score, then you would be invited to interview.

Furthermore, if you're confident about increasing your score, then you might want to use the Optional Essay to indicate that you will be retaking the GMAT (you could even specify the date of your exam).

What you could also do is work with an admissions consultant, not only to help you put together a winning application, but to share with her/him the workload and have more time to focus on GMAT.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!
