Hi there,

I would like to request please a profile evaluation. It would be very helpful if you can provide some guidance on chances and suggested universities within the top 10 US ranked group.

Program: MBA(FT) - Top 10 US business schools (for admission in 2020 R1/R2)
Area of interest in MBA : Management, Consulting, Marketing
GMAT: Due to take it very soon but for the moment assume range 710/730
GPA: 3.7 GPA at University College London (Law degree -top 5 Russell Group law school), 3.8 GPA at a professional university in London which provides a masters you need to complete to become a lawyer combined with an MSc in Law, Business and Management
Work experience(WE): 4 years in the legal industry in a top 50 London law firm, qualified corporate and commercial lawyer with experience in 4 other areas of law. Further shorter work experience with EY and other internships.
Nationality: Eastern European
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Extra-curricular/community: (1) Published author of an international book, (2) author of legal and commercial articles in legal journals, (3) 3 year volunteering experience with schools in underprivileged areas (one to one mentoring and running entire classes) and volunteering at a hospital, (4) leadership award from university, (5) knowledge of 6 languages.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks for reaching out! You're a non-traditional applicant given your law background, and while you can definitely use that to your advantage (especially if you have some post-MBA goals that require a legal foundation - that might be worth considering to strengthen your candidacy) it also presents some challenges. The adcom is looking to see what business impact applicants have had in their careers so far (e.g. generating revenue, cutting costs, leading the launch of something, playing a leadership role, etc) & that can sometimes be challenging when you're not coming from the business world. If it's at all possible to get a GMAT closer to 740 that will help immensely. The GMAT is always important (and a 710 is a pretty average score for top 20 schools) but it's even more important when you're not coming from a business background since it helps convince them you are up for the rigors of their school.

I think you will have a shot at top ten schools but they'll likely be more in the reach category depending on your GMAT. I'd definitely apply to them but would broaden your search to top 20. Even at a school like UCLA for example, which is ranked 16 (we use US News & World Report) the average GMAT score is 720 & like I said, when a non-business background, the adcom is typically looking for an even higher score to convince them that you are up for the rigors of b-school.

I think in your case post-MBA career goals will be especially critical as well. Consulting is a very common goal and it can be tough to set yourself apart. Marketing could work, but it will depend on the specifics - why is marketing your passion? What exposure have you had to it? What type of marketing work do you want to do & why? (e.g. brand management at a CPG? marketing at a tech firm, etc) Like I said, it would be worth considering post-MBA goals where your legal background would give you a distinct advantage. That's one way to take the fact that you don't have a business background & turn it on its head -- using it as a way to differentiate yourself from other applicants.

If you'd like to talk through any of this in more detail feel free to reach out to Claudia at and she can get you set up with a free consultation with one of our MBA consultants!
