I would like to do consulting for a few years to get exposure to a few different businesses. Then pick one to pursue full time.
I am fairly torn between applying this fall and next fall.
I would like to know several things:
1) Are my schools out of reach because of a lack of ECs? If so will starting something up right now be too soon for this falls application cycle?
2) How much will having an extra year of work help me in the admissions process? I am likely to get a direct report if i stick around my job for an extra year. Will that greatly increase my chances because of the "leadership" dimension?

Your "foundation" is strong: you have a great GMAT score, GPA, and academic credentials. Now, it's up to you to show what you can do with that training. Leading one employee is not going to demonstrate enough leadership, in my opinion. You need to either take initiative to make a difference to your company in a significant way or take on a large-scale leadership role in the community to demonstrate that you are more than just a very well-trained brain. Find a way to demonstrate that you possess the interpersonal leadership skills and charisma essential to great CEO's (and starting management consultants). If you are able to make that impact by the end of the summer, then you can certainly apply this year. If it takes until beyond January, then it is most probably more prudent to wait another year to apply.
