Hi there,
Thanks for your post. It looks like you have solid elements of your profile (GMAT score, grades, 5 years of work experience including promotion and leadership/management experience, community involvement; and you realize that yes you'll want to put forth a more decisive goals story for the applications at least. You may not come from top tier universities or firm per se, which could be extra small pluses, but that doesn't have to hold you back per se either. I would not worry about a GMAT re-take (unless for some reason you were scoring 770-780 on recent practice tests and really feel you left points on the table or something but otherwise you are in good shape!). You have the potential to be considered at M7 through top 15 schools with strong applications, essays and recommendations. The challenge is that for the very top options, acceptance rates are so tough that it is still a long shot for most even with a solid profile, so would be ideal to spread out your options somewhat within that top 15 or so. Most people apply to 3-6 schools, at least in a given round (and sometimes more for R2 if there were more they wanted to try for). This is the time of year to really get to know the programs... that helps not only with you finalizing your list, but can make an impact on admission for many of the schools, if you are able to really show deep insight and knowledge on the program and community/culture and why it's a great fit for you.
