Hi all,

I'm new to the forums and have been finding some great advice on here. I have one question: I have no formal business experience (I'm from the nonprofit and education world) but am applying to business school. I like the idea of a 15 or 18-month program, but I'm worried that the lack of a proper internship could hurt me since I don't have any business experience.

I've read in multiple places that 12-month programs are not right for career switchers like me, but does anyone have any thoughts about 15 or 18-month programs? Is the lack of an internship a huge drawback for potential employers, or am I making too much of it?

I think it's going to depend on what field you are going into - perhaps if you provide a little more detail?

In general though, it does seem like my friends in the 18-month program have a harder time switching into banking and consulting.

Thanks Qio,

I'm thinking about going into NGO/development work. I know it's a bit of a weird thing to do with an MBA, but I've found that there is actually quite a bit of demand. If that fails, I could do consulting for a while (if someone hires me) and then try to get more experience in my chosen area.

Thoughts?

That field is notably less competitive than traditional consulting / banking. As such, I don't think that going with an 18-month program would significantly diminish your chances. I would reach out to the schools and try to get them to match you with someone with that profile. Doesn't hurt!
