IMO E.

Others make it sound as if either 'deaths' were approved by the directors.

E is the best, the word obituary looks more suitable than deaths,
as deaths may not be approved by board of directors :)

(A) Promotions, retirements, deaths, and other actions approved by the board of directors at its May meeting will be reported in the July 15 issue of the company paper.
==> deaths approved by board of directors is wrong.
(B) Promotions, retirements, and other actions which have been approved at the May meeting of the board of directors along with deaths, with be reported in the July 15 issue of the company paper.
(C) To be reported in the July 15 issue of the company paper are the promotions, retirements, deaths, and other actions which were approved at the board of directors’ May meeting.
==> Has the same problem as in A. Will keep in contender list.
(D) Meeting in May, the promotions, retirements, and other actions approved by the board of directors, including obituaries, will be reported in the July 15 issue of the company paper.
(E) The July 15 issue of the company paper will report on promotions, retirements, and other actions approved by the board of directors at its May meeting; the paper will also include obituaries.
==> The best option to qualify as Answer

[size=150]
What about its in the options A and E?

=> I was confused about the usage of its. I have realized that "board of directors" has the word "board", which is the antecedent of "its".

=> In the option C, the use of which is not correct. When we will use which in GMAT land, we should use comma before which. So, C is not correct.

Yes, answer is E.

Combining deaths with other approvals does not make sense.

Probably the right sentence will be: Promotions, retirements, and other actions approved by the board of directors at its May meeting and the deaths that occurred until then will be reported in the July 15 issue of the company paper.

ajit257,

daagh brings up a great point here: On the GMAT, little words and endings can be the difference between getting an answer right and getting an answer wrong. Notice how this sentence is similar to:

"The earthquake damaged and destroyed our house."

Notice the "and" here. You can't destroy AND damage something; either you damage it OR you destroy it. You'll see this issue (really related to the meaning of the sentence rather than the grammar) every now and then on the GMAT.

On to your question about doing these problems efficiently:

Whenever you see a split between AND and OR in the SC answer choices, there's a good chance that this is exactly what is being tested. That's why it's so important on the test to consider these questions in the context of their answer choices, rather than just trying to find all the grammatical issues in the original sentence.

Great question!

Brett

Generally you can not parallel actions nouns with other nouns.
Here you have two hints the weird meaning and that rule.
