Psychological research suggests that women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical.

'whereas' is used to introduce a statement that highlights the contrast between two nouns/pronouns or the difference between a noun and a pronoun.

For example: All of my sisters are doctors, whereas I am a teacher. here, the whereas is used to highlight the difference between the noun 'sisters' (sisters are doctors) and the pronoun 'I' (I am a teacher)

Using the same understanding, let us analyze the available answer choices:

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical - here, a prepositional phrase 'for men substance....' is being contrasted with 'symptoms'. Hence, eliminate (A)

(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness - Same error as in (A). Hence, eliminate (B)

(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness - here, a noun ('symptoms') is being contrasted with another noun ('depressive symptoms'). (C) has no error. hence, (C) is the right answer choice

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression - depressive symptoms .... rather than woman? that does not make any sense. Hence, eliminate (D)

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness - here, the relative clause ('which...') modifies recklessness - this modification is illogical. Hence, eliminate (E)

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical. 'substance abuse and recklessness is' wrong as 'substance abuse and recklessness' is plural. Verb should be plural.

(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness. Should be women are more prone than.

(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness.Correct

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression.wrong construction. illogical parallelism between the second symptom of male depression recklessness and women.

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness .'The more prone' wrong.

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical -- This speaks of men in general & not the ones with depressive symptoms, so big meaning difference

(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness -- CORRECT, fixes the issue in A
(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness -- Depression is made an adjective to "symptoms" here and that dilutes the meaning.

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression -- Wordy

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness -- Wordy

So, B

(A) S-V agreement. substance abuse AND recklessness ARE more typical. (A) is out.

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, women.... - is comparing substance abuse and recklessness with women. (E) is out.

(D) Same as (E). OUT

Now, between (B) and (C). I think (B) is comparing symptoms with "in men". Choice (C) Women exhibit symptoms[...], whereas symptoms [....] - it is clearly comparing the symptoms.

IMO (C) is the answer.

Psychological research suggests that women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical.

Let us tackle this question just from the comparison angle and unfurl the correct choice, if possible.

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical --- Women are being compared to substance abuse and recklessness ( strip the prepositional phrase for the time being)---s it correct?

(B) Women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness -- Women are being compared to symptoms of depression. Is it correct?

(C) Women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness --- Women are being compared to depressive symptoms—is it correct?

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression ---Are Women a kind of substance of abuse and recklessness?

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness--- substance abuse and recklessness compared with Women.

It is rather very confusing to analyze this question. Of course, there will be an OA and OE in due course, but will it erase the haze?

Is it B ?
Though i was confused between B and C . Below is my reasoning to eliminate C .

Psychological research suggests that women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical.

Meaning :
This sentence says about a Psychological research .
This suggests that women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness.
But depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness.

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical
-- substance abuse and recklessness is -- SV error -- out

(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness
-- Comparison
correct .. women are prone more than men . Also prep phrase in men modify to symptoms of depression for more clear meaning.

(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness

-- Focus of the contrst shift to depressing symptoms. That seems ilogical . So out .

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression
-- Comparison issue . X rather than Y . X and Y are not parallel here .
(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness
-- Comparison issue . X rather than Y . X and Y are not parallel here .

Answer: C

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical --- Wrong verb tense

(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness ---- wrong comparison. We need "more prone"

(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness --- -CORRECT

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression --- Comparison is not clear. We need to compare clearly WOMEN to MEN.

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness ---- Wrong comparison (woman vs substance abuse and recklessness).

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Psychological research suggests that women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical.

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The singular verb is does not agree with the plural subject substance abuse and recklessness.

(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness

Incorrect.

While this answer choice corrects the Subject Verb Agreement mistake in the original question, it is stylistically flawed.

The corrected sentence changes the idiomatic construction of the comparative more prone than men (more X than Y) to the awkward construction prone more than men (X more than Y).

(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness

This answer choice makes correct use of the Comparative construction more prone than men (more X than Y) to logically compare men and women, and uses the adverb typically to describe the verb include.

In addition, it corrects the original subject verb agreement error by changing the singular verb is to the plural verb include.

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression

Incorrect.

This answer choice is illogical and grammatically incorrect. By changing the sentence structure and using rather, this answer choice creates an illogical parallelism between the second symptom of male depression recklessness and women.

Stop Sign: A rather than B

When you identify this structure, make sure it follows these rules:

    1. A and B must be of the same part of speech.
    2. A and B must be logically parallel.

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness

Incorrect.

This answer choice is illogical. By changing the sentence structure and using rather, this answer choice creates an illogical parallelism between the symptoms of male depression substance abuse and recklessness and women.
