(A) and (B) are the contenders

(B) changes the meaning saying the enthusiasm was in its infancy when some plane disappeared.

(A) is the best.

I request you to post the answers with in two days.

I think B is the correct answer.
It tells us when that the enthusiasm was at its infancy when the plane dissapeared.

A doesn't tell us if the enthusiasm was at its infancy when the plane dissapeared or at the present time.

I think you are right. still in its infancy should tell cleary when

Guys, the answer is C. B has lots of sticking points, e.g. “enthusiasm for airline travelâ€

I think it is B
"still in its infancy" and "diminished for awhile after Amelia Earhart's plane " must be together. Else it sounds like "growing public enthusiasm for airline travel" is still in its infancy even today

I will go with C but I believe this has to do with redundancy

When we are talking about growing, we mean that something is changing. Hence, we do no need to say that something "had been growing" because this "growing" is more concise and means EXACTLY that the object/subject in question is in the process of change. On that basis, I reject A, B and E
D uses "when" instead of "after". The sentence means to say that it is "after" the accident that the growing enthusiasm disappeared. Not DURING the accident as D says.

That is a fine structure.

I see a different point in the sentence.

I still dont accept that had been growing is redundant.
Why would the enthusiasm for flying disappear. It would disappear when flying results in disaster. To say it correctly we should use diminished after a disaster struck and not when the disaster struck.
It cannot disappaer all of a sudden I guess.

(C) relates the events correctly.

Let us wait for th OA. I would be curious to know the source of these questions. GMAT does test semantics of a sentence.

I don't think that "had been growing" is redundant either. Enthusiasm for airline travel started at some point in the past and continued up to the accident.

Hmmm, this leaves me perplexed.

The growing interest for pencils diminished for a while after the invention of BIC .

The interest for pencils had been growing after the invention of BIC and diminished for a while.

The above 2 choices parallel choices C and E

Both sentences here mean the same thing right? Also, even though the second sentence may not be redundant, it seems more wordy and less concise than the first one. Is it not?

Paul, obviously the first sentence is the better and C is the answer. It's just that I don't think that "had been growing" per se is redundant. I'm sorry my post was confusing.

Another vote for (C). because (C) only says, 'Growing public interest dimisnished for a while" properly.

What's the OA.

Anand,

That guest wasn't SmashingGrace, since I believe that the answer is C.

I was a bit confused between C & D, but D has that incorrect use of "when".
