A certain dealership has a number of cars to be sold by its salespeople. How many cars are to be sold?
(1) If each of the salespeople sales 4 of the cars, 23 cars will remain unsold.
(2) If each of the salespeople sales 6 of the cars, 5 cars will remain unsold.

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

C for me as well. Together, we can find the number of salesppl, and hence the number of cars to be sold

Stmt1 .
4Y = X -23
insuff.

Stmt 2.
6Y = X - 5
insuff.

Combining, we get x = 59 and Y = 9...Suff.

But if you try to deduce the number of cars sold, it varies...
Acc to stat 1, the # of cars sold are 36
Acc to stat 2,the # of cars sold are 54.

I guess the answer should be E or am I interpreting incorrectly.

vannu,

you are forgetting to add the unsold cars. For statement I, that will be 26 + 23 = 59. For Statement II, that will be 54 + 5 = 59.

But the question asks whether we can find the number of cars sold. I guess i might be misinterpreting the question...

questions is asking - "how many cars are TO BE SOLD"

ie, how many are there at the dealership that are available for selling.
