Q2:
Hunter: Hunters alone are blamed for the decline in Greenrock National Forest’s deer population over the past ten years. Yet clearly, black bears have also played an important role in this decline. In the past ten years, the forest’s protected black bear population has risen sharply, and examination of black bears found dead in the forest during the deer hunting season showed that a number of them had recently fed on deer.

In the hunter’s argument, the boldface portion plays which of the following roles?

A. It is the main conclusion of the argument.
B. It is an objection that has been raised against the main conclusion of the argument.
C. It is a judgment that the argument opposes.
D. It is a finding that the argument seeks to explain.
E. It provides evidence in support of the main conclusion of the argument.

It is A. The counter argument that the hunter is trying to refute is that hunters alone should be responsible. The conclusion of the hunter's argument is that bears are also responsible. He then used two facts as evidences to support this conclusion.

"A"

Hunters alone are blamed for the decline in Greenrock National Forest’s deer population over the past ten years.

First Premise.

Yet clearly, black bears have also played an important role in this decline.

Main Conclusion

In the past ten years, the forest’s protected black bear population has risen sharply, and examination of black bears found dead in the forest during the deer hunting season showed that a number of them had recently fed on deer.

Evidence leading to conclude that black bears have also played an important role in this decline.

The answer should be (A). If you do a diagramming of the argument, and re-order the points in a chronological order, you can see it very clearly.

(1) Hunters alone are blamed for decline in Greenrock National Forest's deer population over the past 10 yrs
(2) In the past 10 yrs, forest's protected black bear population has risen sharly
(3) Examination of black bears found dead in the forest during the deer hunting season showed a number of them fed on deer
(4) So clearly, black bears have also played an important role in this decline.

Points 1,2,3, are facts. This makes them premises. 4 is a conclusion the author arrives at based on the premises 1,2 and 3. So the bold sentence is indeed the main conclusion of the argument.

i think the main conclusion is that bears AND HUNTERS are responsible not just hunters. therefore i was stuck between B and A
i would go for A because the bold part is a part of the conclusion
the first sentence is a PREMISE not part of a conclusion, there is no evidence justifying the statement regarding hunters.
