So there will be no section for selecting sources of questions on free trial . So I have to buy it for that ?

PS Question 1 - Sep 04

If x < y and y < 10, what is the greatest possible integer value of x + y?

A. 16
B. 17
C. 18
D. 19
E. 20

DS Question 1 - Sep 04

For any integers a and b, min(a, b) and max(a, b) denote the minimum and maximum of a and b, respectively. For example, min(1, 2) = 1 and max(1, 2) = 2. For the integer x, what is the value of max (x, 8)?

(1) max(x^2, x) = 16

(2) min(9, x) = x

1) Two possibilites. x=-4 or x=4, each give the same result - max (-4,8) and max(4,8) are both 8. Suff.

2) x is any integer less than or equal to 9. If x=9, max(9,8)=9 but if say x=4 max(4,8)=4 Ins.

A.

For the integer x, what is the value of max (x, 8)? (1) max(x^2, x) = 16 (2) min(9, x) = x Source: Veritas Prep | Difficulty: Hard
From 1. x = -4 or x = +4 either case max(x,8) = 8 so A is sufficient
From 2. x < 9 since min is x and not 9, if min was 9 then x would have been either = 9 or greater than 9 making the min value 9
Now since x < 9 which means x =< 8, giving the max value for (x,8) as 8

I would select D - both are individually sufficient.

PS Question 1 - Sep 04 If x < y and y < 10, what is the greatest possible integer value of x + y? A. 16 B. 17 C. 18 D. 19 E. 20 Source: Veritas Prep | Difficulty: Medium
greatest possible value for x+y will come when we have the greatest value for x and y withing the given rules.

hence for y greatest value can be 9 since y < 10
And with 9 = y, greatest value for x can be 8 since x < y

Hence x + y = 8+9 = 17.

I would select "B"

It only mentions greatest integer value of x + y
Y < 10, can be 9.6 and x < y can be 9.4, which makes it 19.

D as we need interger of x+y not integer for variable x and y, therefore , the max possible value of x=9.4 and y=9.6, 19

D

Even if you assume x = 9.99, y = 9.98 => x + y = 19.97 => integer value of 19.

Right...missed the point that min(9,x) = x => x may be equal to 9
