What is the value of integer z?

(1) z is the remainder when positive integer y is divided by positive integer (y - 1)

(2) y is not a prime number

Source: Veritas Prep | Difficulty: Hard

Easiest way to do this imo is to test values:

What is the value of integer z?

(1) z is the remainder when positive integer y is divided by positive integer (y - 1)

(2) y is not a prime number

Source: Veritas Prep | Difficulty: Hard

Target: Z=?

1) z is R when y/y-1, y is an int >0.
testing: y=2, 2/1, R0 (z=0), y=3, (3/2), R1, (z=1). Therefore, NS. We have two cases.
2) y is non-prime. no info about X, insuff.
3) since y is non-prime, we can exclude the case of y=2. Let’s test some more values:
y=6, 6/5, R1 (z=1)
y=8, 8/7, R1 (z=1)
y=9, 9/8, R1 (z=1)
Clear pattern here. Therefore, C.

A

Almost... the case of y=2 makes A NS.

Even multiples of 15 from 295 to 615 are 300, 330, 360 .... 570, 600
Total numbers = (600-300)/30 + 1 = 11
Sum = 11/2 (300+600) = 11/2 * 900 = 11*450 = 11*9*25*2 = 2*(3^2)*(5^2)*11
Hence, 11 is the greatest prime factor

A

if y = 2, then y/(y-1) has remainder as 0. rest all cases remainder is 1. combining both statement addresses this outlier, hence C

No, I don’t think so, it is just a marketing gimmick :lol: :lol: :lol:

Hopefully something catchier than Quant Chat but welcome ideas from more talented marketers. My skills tend to suck at 11 PM :lol:

E. 132

12:24 - the hour hand makes an angle of (24/60)*(360/12) = 12
the minute hand makes an angle of (24/60)*(360) = 144
Difference = 144-12 = 132

Re: Quant Question of the Day Chat [#permalink]
Statement 1: If units digit of 2m is 4, then the units digit of m can be either 2 or 7. Take 62, 2*62=124. Take 67, 2*67=134. Eliminate A and D.

Statement 2: If units digit of m equals to tens digit of 2m, then m can either be 62, 2*62=124 or 74, 2*74=148. Ofcourse these are just 2 such examples. Eliminate B.

Now, m is either of 52, 57, 62, 67, 72, 77, 82, 87, 92, and 97. Of these when you do 2m, you get 104, 114, 124, 134, 144, 154, 164, 174, 184, and 194. We see that 62 and 87 meet both the conditions, hence answer is E.
