Is it expected that essays be double-spaced?

Double-spacing is hideous.

Thanks for the tips. I also am not a fan of double spacing, but always assumed that it was the norm. I could try for the more appealing 1.5 spacing with modified margins. Are there any font recommendations beyond Times New Roman and Arial?

See if either 11 pt Garamond or Palatino Linotype work? Don't use Arial if you're trying to reduce page coverage.
