Questions 22-23

Despite improvements in treatment for asthma, the death rate form this disease has doubled during the past decade from its previous rate. Two possible explanations for this increase have been offered. First, the recording of deaths due to asthma has become more widespread and accurate in the past decade than it had been previously. Second, there has been an increase in urban pollution. However, since the rate of deaths due to asthma has increased dramatically even in cities with long-standing, comprehensive medical records and with little or no urban pollution, one must instead conclude that the cause of increased deaths is the use of bronchial inhalers by asthma sufferers to relieve their symptoms.

22. Each of the following, if true, provides support to the argument EXCEPT:

(A) Urban populations have doubled in the past decade.
(B) Records of asthma deaths are as accurate for the past twenty years as for the past ten years.
(C) Evidence suggests that bronchial inhalers make the lungs more sensitive to irritation by airborne pollen.
(D) By temporarily relieving the symptoms of asthma, inhalers encourage sufferers to avoid more beneficial measures.
(E) Ten years ago bronchial inhalers were not available as an asthma treatment.

23. Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) Urban pollution has not doubled in the past decade.
(B) Doctors and patients generally ignore the role of allergies in asthma.
(C) Bronchial inhalers are unsafe, even when used according to the recommended instructions.
(D) The use of bronchial inhalers aggravates other diseases that frequently occur among asthma sufferers and that often lead to fatal outcomes even when the asthma itself does not.
(E) Increased urban pollution, improved recording of asthma deaths, and the use of bronchial inhalers are the only possible explanations of the increased death rate due to asthma.

Question Type: Except (Strengthen). Look for AC that doesnt strengthen AC.
Conclusion: Not urban pollution, Not lack of accurate records but inhalers are the cause of increased death.

22) My AC is A.. Explanation below:

A) Not sure this doesnt strengthen so dont bootout.
B) If records are accurate then it strengthen conclusion [not lack of accurate records] but something else.
C) Inhalers cause lung to be more sensitive. This implies inhaler could be cause for increase death.
D) Not sure. Dont boot out.
E) Strengthen argument. Causal argument.

Between A and D, i boot D out: temporary solutions prevents users from seeking a more benificial/permanent solution. So it could strengthen the argument.

23) My AC is E. Explanation below:

A) Negate A. Not sure. So dont bootout AC.
B) Negate B. Doctors and patients dont ignore role of allergies. Conclusion inhaler are cause of death still holds true.
C) Negate C. Bronchial inhalers are safe. Conclusion still holds true.
D) Negate D. Bron inhalers dont aggragate other diseases. Conclusion that Inhalers not increased pollution or better records still hold true.
E) Negate E. Inc. urban poll, improv. recording, and bron inhalers ARENT only possible explanations. Then the conclusion doenst hold true.

Negate AC A. Urban pollution has doubled. Still conclusion holds true.

1) Death rate from asthma doubled over the last decade, despite better treatment

2) Two possible reasons: record is more widespread and more accurate. Urban pollution is worse.

3) However cities with comprehensive medicla record and little urban pollution also has increased death due to asthma

4) Increased death must be casued by bronchial inhalers <-- conclusion

22. Each of the following, if true, provides support to the argument EXCEPT:

(A) Urban populations have doubled in the past decade.
- If urban populatiosn doubled in the past decade, then it's possible that the record of deaths due to asthma wll be more widespread.

(B) Records of asthma deaths are as accurate for the past twenty years as for the past ten years.
- If records are as accurate for the past 20 yrs as for the past 10 yrs, then the argument that records a more accurte today will fall apart.

(C) Evidence suggests that bronchial inhalers make the lungs more sensitive to irritation by airborne pollen.

(D) By temporarily relieving the symptoms of asthma, inhalers encourage sufferers to avoid more beneficial measures.
- If this is the case, then it's possible that bronchial inhalers is the cause of the increased death as it encourages asthmatic patients not to seek effective treatement

(E) Ten years ago bronchial inhalers were not available as an asthma treatment.
- If 10 yrs ago bronchial inhalers were not available and today it is, there is a possibility that the inhalers play a part in the increased death rate

I'll take C on this one. There is nothing in the passage that suggests irritation of the lungs due to airborne pollen will result in the death.

23. Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) Urban pollution has not doubled in the past decade.
- Does not hold up the conclusion that bronchial inhalers are the cuase of death to asmath sufferers

(B) Doctors and patients generally ignore the role of allergies in asthma.
- Out. Same reason as above.

(C) Bronchial inhalers are unsafe, even when used according to the recommended instructions.
- If this is so, then it is possibly true that using bronchial inhalers is the cause of death among asthma patients.

(D) The use of bronchial inhalers aggravates other diseases that frequently occur among asthma sufferers and that often lead to fatal outcomes even when the asthma itself does not.
- If this is true, we can't say what caused the asthmatic patients to pass away. Out.

(E) Increased urban pollution, improved recording of asthma deaths, and the use of bronchial inhalers are the only possible explanations of the increased death rate due to asthma.
- If these are the only explanations of the increased death, then the conclusion does not hold as it says the only cause is bronchial inhalers.

C for me.
