"Randy's" bar serves customers every weeknight from 5 pm to 1 am. In Randy's bar, "Silvermoon" beer is sold at a constant rate except during happy hour, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, when the rate triples.

If a keg of Silvermoon beer is half empty at 5pm on Monday, and two-thirds empty at the beginning of the happy hour, when will it be completely empty?

A. Monday, 7:30 pm
B. Monday, 9 pm
C. Monday, 7 pm
D. Monday, 6:45 pm
E. Monday, 9:30 pm

Let the keg be a 150 Litre keg
At 5 pm.. There are 75 litres
At 6:30 pm there are 50 litres.

So, consumption rate is 25 litres per 1.5 hours.

So it will take 3 hours to finish 50 litres at this rate.

During happy hour it sells 3 times faster. So, rate = 1 hour per 50 litres.

So, keg becomes empty at 6:30 + 1 hour = 7:30 pm

Answer is A.

Macfauz,

Thanks for the solution. I acutally spent close to 3 minutes on this Q during the exam. I just wanted to understand about how you picked numbers. Did you start with 150 lts itself or revised later.
I do consider numbers based on LCM prinicple but some how goof up in pressure situation.

Any pointers ....

I'd choose a number which is a multiple of both 2 and 3: we have 1/2 and 2/3 mentioned in the stem.

Say the capacity is 6 liters:
At 5 pm. 3 liters are left.
At 6:30 pm 2 liters are left.

Regular consumption 1 liter in 1.5 hours.
Tripled consumption 3 liters in 1.5 hours, or 3/1.5=2 liters per hour.

At 6:30 pm, when the happy hour starts, 2 liters are left, hence at the rate of 2 liters per hour 1 "happy" hour is needed to empty the keg.

Answer: E.

Hope it helps.

if 1/2 was at 5pm and 1/3 at 6:30, that means that in 90 minutes, the clients consumed 1/6 of the beer.
now, since 1/6 is consumed in 1.5 hours, let's find how much is consumed in 1 hour:
1/6 * 2/3 = 1/9 is consumed in 1 hour.
since the sales triple during the happy hour, the sales of the beer would be 1/9 * 3 or 3/9 or 1/3.

Now, we know that at 6:30 there is left only 1/3 of the beer. between 6:30 and 7:30 is consumed 1/3 of the total beer. It must be true that at 7:30 there will be no beer left.

the same is true if we pick numbers:
suppose there are 120 liters of beer in total
60 was at 5pm, and 40 was at 6:30 pm
ok, so 20 liters were consumed during 1.5 hours.
multiply 20 by 2/3 to see how much during 1 hour is consumed -> 40/3.
during the happy hour, the sales/consumption triples to 40/3*3 or 40 liters.
since we were left with 40 liters at 6:30, and since 40 liters is consumed during the happy hour, 0 liters would be left at 7:30.

Your post also says that 1 happy hour is sufficient to empty the keg, but you wrote Answer E. Is it by mistake? Thanks for your posts. They are really helpful.
