Ranking Consulting Schools based on LinkedIn members

This is what popped up when I did a quick filter on the big 3 consulting firms: Bain, McKinsey, and BCG. Here is how schools stack up against each other based off of sheer numbers of current (interns) and former (full-time consultants) students from each program currently with MBB:

1. HBS - 909
2. Wharton - 710
3. Kellogg - 584
4. Columbia - 369
5. Chicago - 307
6. Stanford - 304
7. MIT - 301
8. Michigan - 221
9. Tuck - 162
10. NYU - 133
11. Haas - 122
12. Duke - 120
13. Darden - 91
14. UCLA - 79
15. Cornell - 55
16. Yale - 43

Of course not all schools are the same size so if you wanted a more accurate ranking you would need to adjust each number based on each programs class size, but I will let you do that math 8-)

I think this is a fair indicator. As suggested, things like class size, and school history also plays a part. For example, Fuqua (#12 on your list) only started in 1970 with a class size of 20.

I think a better indicator of current situation is to look at the latest employment report. Even that is misleading, since some school's student population is less consulting focused.

IMO, if your school is in the core school for the company you are recruiting for, you should be fine.

Also, GMATClub discussions focus a lot on consulting and ibanking; however, consulting and ibanking isn't the goal for every students. I find that many of my classmates actually shy away from consulting and ibanking in favor of management and marketing for the work/life balance. In fact, the General Management Club and Marketing Club are two of the largest and best-run clubs here at Fuqua.

Very cool approach and in general it shows real situation. Look at Stanford :o

I bet if Stanford had a class size like the schools above it, it would be right up there.

I highly doubt there are many consultants included in those numbers graduated pre-1980. Those numbers are probably very heavily weighted to recent grads since very few people stay at the big firms for more than several years.

I've taken the same numbers and divided by class size to control for that factor. There are a few others that cannot be controlled for - career goals, interests, location preferences, etc.
