Incorrect wrong use of "if", where "whether" is preferred.

Incorrect wrong use of "if", where "whether" is preferred.

c Instead of accepting the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, Christopher Columbus sailed west to see whether he could reach India, having been sent by the king and queen of Spain.

If the answer is D, what does "having been sent by the king and queen of Spain" modify?

Agree with D.

Testing 'Instead of' vs 'rather than' and misplaced modifier.
