cash proceeds should be followed by sale..
A,C,D are out
Between B and E will go with E.
Cant give an explanation as to how E is better than B.

let me weigh in on this...

families began to specialize ...began to use the cash proceeds from the sale...of the their crops...remember they are sellin crops which is plural, we dont need sales..plus to buy is more idiomatic than for buying...

for buying also makes the stem passive, we prefer active voice...

Very tricky SC.

I also mistakenly fell for B, but after carefully rereading "grain or cotton," I now understand why sale should be singular.

(E)

Definitely 'E'.

Rather than continue to produce most of the items necessary for subsistence, a growing number of farm families during the first decades of the nineteenth century began to specialize in the production of grain or cotton and to use the cash proceeds from the sale of their crops to buy necessities.

We must use to buy in this case.
