Raw score , Scaled score and percentile chart

Thanks. Your chart is great. But at this point I need something to map my math and verbal sets score. I am looking for something like (see below). But Iam not sure about the accuracy of teh charts.

What you are looking for does not exist. There is no known "strike" rate for the GMAT. You could get 30% of the problems on the GMAT incorrect and still score quite high (assuming you're in the most difficult questions).

This question comes up quite a bit. Most of the prep companies say the same thing, don't look for a strike rate, look for consistency in solving problems.

I gave some adaptive tests online,but did not get an estimated score,
so could you give an update for the conversion of raw score to scaled score for 2016-2017

Hi karanchamp1,

A standard score report for a CAT should include Scaled Scores and Percentiles for both the Quant and Verbal sections and for your Overall Score. If that data is not included with a practice Test/CAT, then you might be using a questionable practice resource. What 'brand' of tests are you referring to (and are you sure that they're adaptive?)?

Hi karanchamp1,

Unfortunately, that type of data cannot be converted into an appropriate set of Scale/Percentile data points - the Scoring Algorithm for the Official GMAT is far more complex than most people realize (and it factors in a number of different variables - far more than just the number of correct answers). If this software doesn't include the standard data points that you're looking for, then I would have to assume that the designer doesn't know how the properly convert the information. By extension, I would have to question what else the designer does not know. This is all meant to say that you would likely find it beneficial to invest in some practice CATs that DO include all of the information that you're looking for.

So I guess the stories about a super-secret algorithm are true indeed ,
I have my GMAT appointment scheduled for 21st of December and I'm practicing full length tests day n night but I have no idea of where i'm going with this.
I've already utilized the official GMAT prep tests and scored 620 and 580 on them,and after studying and practicing for 3 months I realized I'm ready to face the real thing so last week I scheduled an appointment for exactly 1 month period(21 December).
I am aiming for a 720+ score
Could you share some insights from your experience,It would be really helpful

To start, it's important to remember that taking lots of CATs will NOT make you a better Test Taker. A CAT is really a 'measuring device' - when used correctly, it will give you a realistic score and help define your strengths and weaknesses, but it will NOT help you to fix any of those weaknesses. To raise your scores, you have to put in the necessary practice and repetitions. The CAT will show you whether your studies are helping you to improve or not. As such, taking CATs "day and night" is NOT a good use of your time - you really shouldn't take more than 1 FULL CAT per week.

You might find it beneficial to purchase a new set of practice CATs so that we can get a better sense of your current skills.

No more than one test a week,noted!
So,here's my current profile
1) I am aiming for a 720+ score
2) I am a fresh graduate and so I have not lost the capability of studying for hours straight,
I have< 1 years working experience BUT the GMAT is valid for 5 years right so I want to score big now and after 4 years I will have fair amount of experience to get into one of those top 20 US universities
3) I am still working on my discipline/options among marketing,finance,operations and HR being top four choices.

So basically I want a top notch score on the GMAT like 720-760,
yesterday I gave a M-GMAT free CAT got score of 670
So what do you suggest??

Focusing on the GMAT now - so that you can 'lock in' a competitive Score and apply to Business School later on - is a smart choice. However, with your current timeline, you have just a little over 2 weeks of study time remaining - and that might not be enough time for you to get up to your goal score level. This is meant to say that you might want to consider pushing back your Test Date.

This recent 670 is certainly an improvement over the prior scores that you mentioned. I have a few questions about how you took this CAT:

1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take it at home?
3) Did you take it at the same time of day as your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during this CAT that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take this CAT before? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE?

Hey Rich, your feedback was much awaited so i'll cut to the point
1)Yes, I always take the entire CAT (oh and I got a zero in IR )
2)Yes, I took it at home (seated in exam like conditions)
3)Yes, I take all my tests at scheduled time(1 pm)
4)No, I took it under 'normal' test conditions so no pausing or skipping (in fact the second break seemed too long so I just took something like 2 minutes)
5)No, First attempt only and they were all new questions

Moreover I was running out of time in the quant section towards the end so I sort of answered the last ten questions in a haste and out of the last 4 questions(for which I had only the last minute) I got 3 right(they were wild guesses) so I think we can balance the slight discrepancies.
Also sometimes I answer few questions in a "auto-pilot" mode,its like my brain has recognized some patterns in the traps set by GMAT answer choices which are seemingly different.
SO what do you suggest??

I gave a Kaplan test today got 700 (see attachment)
Also could you give an input on the relative difiiculty of MGMAT,KAPLAN and other free test scores

Hi karanchamp1,

Your practice CAT scores continue to improve, so I can't fault anything that you're doing right now - although I still think you would benefit from having more study time than you currently have left. Taking the CATs at home is NOT realistic, so you might want to plan to take your last 1-2 CATs at an external location (traveling to, and testing in, a 'foreign' environment is a part of Test Day).

Have you had a chance to fully review this CAT. After reviewing each section, how many questions did you get wrong....
1) Because of a silly/little mistake?
2) Because there was some math/verbal that you just could not remember how to do?
3) Because the question was too hard?
4) Because you were low on time and had to guess?

At your scoring level, you really have to nitpick your performances and define WHY you're getting questions wrong. The 'gettable' questions (that you're getting wrong) represent the missing points that you're looking for.

Firstly,
I get it,that if I postpone my appointment I COULD improve my score,however
Like you say

And, so I JUST CANNOT PUSH the APPOINTMENT BUT I am willing to PUSH MYSELF
(my subconscious is like spoiled child,today I give him a candy tomorrow I find him addicted to sugar)
That being said
I like your idea of giving the last 1 or 2 tests in a testing environment
As for the mistake analysis,
I am maintaining an error log (its voluminous )
and most of the mistakes I make are due to
(1)They are really silly like I sometimes I just answer the wrong question,because I did not pay attention to the wording.
(2)I don't remember the approach(such as in Combinatorics)
So,I'm still working on it.So what do you insinuate??

Silly/little mistakes are almost always the result of organization problems with the note-taking that people do (or don't do). If "your way" of approaching the GMAT makes you susceptible to those types of mistakes, then that could lead to a big potential 'swing' in your GMAT scores. This is all meant to say that you might want to think about how 'precise' your work is while you practice - if you're not doing work 'on the pad', then that is something to work on.
