Hi,
I just got a 700 on my first try of GMAT. I am debating if I should retake it in order to have a good chance with top 10 or at least top 20 b-schools. I graduated from a top 20 university about 2 years ago and currently work in the energy industry. My undergrad GPA kinda suffered because I transferred in junior year. I'm not in rush to apply for MBA by any means since I want to get more work experience, but I do want to apply at some point within the next 5 years. I would appreciate it if someone could advise me on whether I should retake it or I should focus more on other things, such as work experience and volunteer activities. Thank you.

If you feel like you can improve, then I would recommend taking the exam again. A 700 is a fantastic score and will certainly not keep you out of any Bschool, but as you likely know, it is a little bit below average for the top schools. Since you mentioned that your GPA isn't the best, you may want to counter it with a top GMAT score. If you can improve your verbal, you may end up with a 730+ GMAT score.

What were your sub scores? If your score is not balanced, then I would recommend you retake, especially since you have time. Also, how difficult was it for you to get a 700? How much additional energy do you think it would take to raise your score by 30 points? A 700 is a solid score and a retake is not critical, but average GMAT scores rise every year at the top schools.

Thank you, DefyingGravity. My quant was 51 and verbal was 35, I guess not quite balanced. I came from an analytical background. I studied engineering in college and now I work as an analyst on the trade floor. I am seriously considering taking it, since my GPA and work experience are not extraordinary. I definitely want something to stand out.
