It should be E.
preference for something. ( I have preference for sweet food over spicy).
"prererence to" is also correct idiom, but not in our case.
Example. We give preference to those who have worked with us for a long time.

On exam day i would spend 5 min on thsi ques trying to recollect what's the right idiom "preference for" or "preference to"
then would finally hit E.

and would be short of time for the rest :P

(A) incorrectly uses "preference to..."

The correct idioms are: ~prefer to/preference for~

Since a noun is necessary to properly complete the sentence, the latter is correct.

Go with E,preferece for should be the correct idiom.
