Although statistics and definitions are inexact, educated guesses put the number of refugees worldwide at well over 10 million. The overwhelming majority prefer to return to their native land than to emigrate to a foreign one. The millions of refugees from Afghanistan are sufficient proof: Despite the toll the war and subsequent fighting have taken on their country, very few have applied for permission to emigrate.

Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the argument above?

(A) Most refugees are as reluctant to emigrate as are the refugees from Afghanistan.
(B) The refugees from Afghanistan fled what they considered political oppression rather than economic disaster.
(C) Most of the children born to refugees prefer to remain in their adoptive country rather than return to the land their parents left.
(D) Although refugees flee their homes for a variety of different reasons, the overwhelming majority are looking for improved living conditions.
(E) The number of refugees worldwide has risen dramatically over the last ten years.

As this is a CR question, lets first read the question stem, this question is a strengthen the argument question.

Let’s understand the given information now.

• There are approx.. 10 million refugees worldwide
• Majority of them prefer to return to their native land over emigration to a foreign one
• Example: Despite war situation on Afghanistan, very few people have applied for permission to emigrate

Now lets scan the available options:

(A) Most refugees are as reluctant to emigrate as are the refugees from Afghanistan.
- Hold on to this option, do not read further unless you read the explanation for other options. ----- This option establishes a link between refugees from Afghanistan with the other refugees, and this link talks about the reason refers to why people in Afghanistan prefer to stay in their own country which indirectly applies to all other refugees.

(B) The refugees from Afghanistan fled what they considered political oppression rather than economic disaster.
- This option talks about why Afghanistan people emigrated, which does not support the passage, rather talks exact opposite of why people would like to stay in their own country.

(C) Most of the children born to refugees prefer to remain in their adoptive country rather than return to the land their parents left.
- Argument nowhere talks about the children’s of emigrants, this option is irrelevant.

(D) Although refugees flee their homes for a variety of different reasons, the overwhelming majority are looking for improved living conditions.
- This option again talks about why people leave the country which does not support the argument

(E) The number of refugees worldwide has risen dramatically over the last ten years.
- Again, number of refugees are increasing talks exactly opposite of what the argument is talking about. Hence, we can eliminate this option.

Hence, the answer is A

The millions of refugees from Afghanistan are sufficient proof:

Despite the toll the war and subsequent fighting have taken on their country, very few have applied for permission to emigrate.

If we show the case with Afghanistanis is not an exception rather a generic pattern with other refugees as well, we will support the above argument the most.

A does that
