E. Regarded by analysts as the result of tensions during the Cold War, sales of the spy novel reached their zenith in the 1960s, when most Americans perceived the U.S.S.R. as a constant threat.

First thing's first: idiom is "Regarded...as..."; A and B are out.
C is out b/c its too wordy and not very clear; use of "like" is wrong
so I narrowed it down to D and E.
D - indicates that the spy novel was a result of the cold war
E - seems most clear to me; indicates that sales of a spy novel peaked b/c of tension during the cold war.

Tricky b/c both D and E appear correct. Must look at what the sentence is saying to pick.

I chose E.

E
Sales reached the zenith not the book.
Also "when" should be close to 1960 .

I think E. it is the shooting up of sales of spy novel that is regarded as the result of cold war, not the spy novel.

I guess E is correct.. It's the high sales of spy novel that was the result of cold war and not the spy novel itself and that is why analysts come into the picture.

It's either C or E. other choices can be easily eliminated.

Out of C and E, the correct word order is in "E".
