A. an increase in

B. increases

C. increases of

D. to increase

E. creates an increase in

Parallelism is tested.

Only (B) and (E) fit the bill, however (B) is more concise.

Official Explanation

(A) This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The first two items in the list at the end of the sentence are conjugated verbs (reduces, lowers), but the third item is a noun (an increase).

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:
A list of 3 items or more, separated by commas and and/or before the last item.

(B) In the original sentence, the first two items in the list are conjugated verbs (reduces, lowers), but the third item is a noun (an increase). This answer choice corrects the error by using another conjugated verb (increases).

(C) This answer choice repeats the original Parallelism mistake. The first two items in the list at the end of the sentence are conjugated verbs (reduces, lowers), but the third item is a noun (increases of).

(D) This answer choice repeats the original Parallelism mistake. The first two items in the list at the end of the sentence are conjugated verbs (reduces, lowers), but the third item is unconjugated (to increase).

(E) Although this answer choice corrects the original Parallelism mistake and is grammatically correct, it is stylistically flawed (specifically, redundant.)

Answer: B
