While studying from the MGMAT guides for number properties, they recommend you rephrase the problem to eliminate wrong choices. The OA answer explanations do not use this approach. While I personally found rephrasing as a very efficient way of solving DS problems, I only fear getting it wrong if I rush into it.
How many of you follow rephrasing as opposed to plain vanilla DS solving?

Also for those that rephrase do you actually pen down the rephrasing or do it mentally?

I guess the point I am making is the difference between the two approaches a matter of speed vs. accuracy?

I like the rephrasing strategy, but I only use it if I don't feel 100% comfortable with the way the question is already phrased. If it seems confusing to me at all or I quickly see an easier way to interpret I'll write it down so I don't lose focus of what they are asking. Also I'll rearrange or rephrase the info given and write that down if it pops out at me so I don't have to interpret that again. Like if it says x=2n+1 or something like that, I will just jot down x is odd, which is easier for me to work with than look at the given equation again when I go to the statements.

I use it. I actually write out the intermediate steps, just in case they appear in one of the statements. I start out doing easy/obvious steps, and then look at the statements. Some DS have to be rephrased to be able to answer.

i do a combination of both - if the rephrasing seems too tricky i try and not use it and just do it normally

I'll rephrase as much as I can. Especially with inequalities -- I've been pleasantly surprised by how much rephrasing a complicated question can set up. Sometimes the DS answers are exactly what my rephrasing points to (e.g., (1) x 3)
