I am Gaurav from INDIA. I am 25 years old. My profile is as follows:

>Class 10 - 91%
>Class 12 - 92%
>Bachelors in Engineering (Electronics & Telecommunications) 4 years full time - CGPA - 9.1/10 from a reputed University in INDIA
>2 years Full time work experience in IBM INDIA PVT. LTD. as a SAP Business Intelligence Consultant
>Currently pursuing MBA in Capital Markets (2012-14) from India from a reputed B-school. CGPA for first year - 3.6/4.
>I have 4-5 corporate projects in my name, in the area of IPO, Private Equity deal, Capital Budgeting, Business strategy for SMEs, etc.

I want to pursue a Masters in Finance from abroad, with focus on following areas:

Corporate finance
Investment Banking
Mergers & Acquisition
Private Equity/ Venture Capital
Valuation
and other related subjects

Is it the right stage in my career to go for a Masters in Finance? If Yes, then how should I go about it? Kindly assist me.

Thank you for your posting.

From an admissions perspective, the MFin programs will wonder why you want a very similar degree after completing your MBA. They will wonder, an rightly so, if finance was your interest, then you should have gotten all the coursework and experience during your MBA studies and further, been able to secure a job in your targeted industry. From my perspective, it is going to be a tough sell to gain admissions into any of the competitive programs.

Respected Sir/Mam,
Thank you for your reply. The current MBA which I am pursuing is more like a general MBA with some emphasis on Capital Market subjects in the second year. It does not involve in-depth study as would be in a masters in finance program (I am expecting that a MS in Finance would involve in-depth study of the course subjects).

The MBA in India is more theoretical (just brushing the topics) and less interactive with negligible/little contribution from the fellow students, rather than being practical oriented where we can exchange different perspectives and learn from each other.

For example, in the lecture on Valuation, we were just taught how to put the given values in the CAPM model and apply the DCF using the general formula.
We never got any practical knowledge on how to arrive at the values used in CAPM or any live case scenarios. There are no discussions or inputs from students by means of which we can share from each other's experiences.

I have good job opportunity here in India, but I am looking to gain more knowledge by applying to some practical oriented Finance program. I expect to contribute and learn from others' experiences.

Is there any way I can make a strong rationale for applying to a Masters in Finance program? I really want to gain quality education and can contribute a lot from the experience that I am gaining from my corporate projects.

You can always try to make your case -- I am only telling you the realities of the situation as it pertains to admissions. This makes your application -- especially your essays -- all the more important. Simply put, they have to be compelling as admissions will have the same questions that I posed.

Yes, I am a little worried on that front, but since I am really eager for a good quality education, I would definitely try and make this as a strength. Thank you for the advice. If there are any more important points that I need to take care of, kindly do let me know.
