Hiii I am planning to apply for MBA programs for 2014. I request you to evaluate my profile and guide me in selecting the ‘best fit b-schools’ for my profile.

GMAT : 680 ; Q - 45 , V - 38 Acads : B.Tech –Control & Instrumentation from reputed private University-India (YOP :2009) ; GPA : 7.3/10

Work ex: 4 years – in one of the biggest Construction & infra MNCs in India. – $14 billion in revenue Sector : Power Sector – EPC

Work ex description : Have been in diverse profiles such as : Project Management , Contracts Management, Marketing & Proposals, .Currently part of Project Execution & Commissioning team at a site for a 1400 MW thermal Power plant in India.

Other interests : Actively Organizing company level cultural & sports events , CSR activities. Completed a one year online Program – Harvard Managementor.

MBA purpose : Career Switch. I Want to gain exposure in Gen. Management/Marketing/Strategy/Org. Behaviour while leveraging my diverse experience in Project Management domain. Want to explore sectors such as Renewable Energy/Education/Non-profit/Sports Management either in Consulting/Gen. Management/Proj. Mgt domain in India or abroad.

Shorlisted B-schools : CMU Tepper,Tuck,Duke,Michigan Ross,Insead,HEC Paris,NUS. Kindly help to select among these and others that i missed out.

My priorities are : Good Program for Career transition to Non-Finance areas, Good placement record & services, Small to medium size of intake,Helpful & collaborative environment,Costs & Scholarships

Also, I have a Dilemma in choosing between 1 yr and 2 year MBA. While a 2 year MBA is suited for me as it gives time for managing career transition but costs are too high as compared to 1 year MBA.

I’d consider most of the programs you mention to be reasonable reaches – perhaps NUS would be on-par, and INSEAD a very high reach. Therefore, I suggest adding some schools in the on-par range, which would be programs on the level of Rice MBA (Jones b-school) in US or IE in Spain.

As for the 2-year vs. 1-year question, I don’t have a clear answer – there are benefits and drawbacks to each, and so it’s a “gray” area. Perhaps apply to both 1- and 2-year programs, and if you end up with multiple acceptances and the need to choose among them, you can make the decision at that time, based on the specifics of the schools and your situation.
