Hello there.
I am definitely a specialist in SC, but I have a try:

A) "It" may not refer to "advanced courses", because "it" is singular and "adv courses" is plural
B) Seems fine... let's go to next
C) "They" could refer to either "adv courses" or "candidates"
D) What is required?
E) This phrase is modifying "candidates" instead of "adv. courses"

Do you have the official answer?

Thanks for the reply. [B] seemed right to me too, but apparently the answer is [C]. Here's the explanation -

41. C. The first clause must have a subject, or it will dangle as it does in B, D, and E. The correct pronoun is the plural they to agree with the plural three courses.

Do not agree with OA. B for me.
"they" can relate either to candidates or to courses

Although I chose C, I can see others' frustration with the answer choices. Anything outside of real GMAT questions will be off the mark.

Still, I think badgerboy identifies the logic behind this Cliffs question. Besides, if B is correct, then so is D.

My guess is actully for B as well...

I don't that would make D correct also though. D leaves out a very important statement that the requirement is "for admission". Remember that you want to retain the meaning of the orginal sentence as much as possible.

The call is between B and D. I think grammatically both are correct.
D changes the meaning by removing "for admission" clause whereas B retains the original meaning.

FINALLY B.

Problem with B is that it alters the meaning. It sounds as if candidates are required for admission! But then this is the same problem with C also.

Please correct me if I am wrong as I am no expert on sentence correction.
IMO, the answer is C because:
After a subordinator - I think it should a clause
they must agreed with the advance courses as antecedent and pronoun
