Conclusion : the learned behaviors (hostility, distrust, lack of empathy), rather than the difficulty of adjusting to divorce cause the children’s psychological problems.

Ques - The assertion that children of divorced parents have a higher rate of psychological problems than other children figures in the argument in which one of the following ways?

Pre-thinking : By analysing the passage in detail, we notice that the statment "children of divorced parents have a higher rate of psychological problems than other children" is presented as a background information. This is neither the conclusion nor the premise. This presents mostly some kind of result of study or survey.

Choice Analysis :
(A) It is the conclusion of the argument. - Incorrect as the identified conclusion is different.

(B) It is the claim that the argument tries to refute. - Incorrect as the argument is not refuting this claim but the reason behind this claim.

(C) It is offered as evidence for the claim that divorce is harmful to the children of the divorcing parents. - Incorrect as this is irrelavnt to the passage. Also, the claim of the passage is different.

(D) It is offered as evidence for the claim that certain behaviors are often responsible for divorce. - Incorrect as it is not presented as evidence for the claim in option but as a fact in the passage.

(E) It is cited as an established finding for which the argument proposes an explanation. - Correct It is indeed mentioned as a finding and the rest of the passage proposes an explanation for this.

Claim: The rate of psychological problems is higher among children of divorced parents than among other children.
Explanation : But it would be a mistake to conclude that these problems are caused by the difficulty the children have adjusting to divorce.
Alternate Explanation /Conclusion: It is just as reasonable to infer that certain behaviors that increase the likelihood of divorce—hostility, distrust, lack of empathy—are learned by children from their parents, and that it is these learned behaviors, rather than the difficulty of adjusting to divorce, that cause the children’s psychological problems.

The assertion that children of divorced parents have a higher rate of psychological problems than other children figures in the argument in which one of the following ways?

(A) It is the conclusion of the argument. - not the conclusion as per our prethinking

(B) It is the claim that the argument tries to refute. - argument doesn't refute rather explain the claim

(C) It is offered as evidence for the claim that divorce is harmful to the children of the divorcing parents. - not an evidence but rather a claim itself

(D) It is offered as evidence for the claim that certain behaviors are often responsible for divorce. - not an evidence but rather a claim itself

(E) It is cited as an established finding for which the argument proposes an explanation.
- established finding = claim by expert (researcher), yes in line with our prethinking

(A) It is the conclusion of the argument.
It's a premise, not a conclusion.

(B) It is the claim that the argument tries to refute.
Again no, the statement is stated as a fact.

(C) It is offered as evidence for the claim that divorce is harmful to the children of the divorcing parents.
No. Misses the main point of the argument.

(D) It is offered as evidence for the claim that certain behaviors are often responsible for divorce.
There is no such evidence stated.

(E) It is cited as an established finding for which the argument proposes an explanation.
Correct Answer.
