A. wrong construction 'was or was not'. Wrong time ('is' required)
B. 'whether or not' - right construction. 'Was' changed to 'is'. Than correctly terminated by 'is'. Right one - correct answer
C-E. 'but that' is awkward and ungrammatical.

What is OA?

IMO C.

The sentence is using the structure X but Y, we need to maintain parallelism between X and Y.
Here to maintain parallelism, we need to have a "that" after "but"
Researchers agreed that the study......but that more research....

I am not fan of 'whether or not', 'whether' is sufficient.

IMO:

- agreed that .. , but that -> shows parallelism.
Can someone confirm?

- Also in B 'is' is not necessary in end.
Is it?

I pick C.

Just a little query!!

The whole sentence is of past tense.

Why we are using "is" in below phrase
balloon angioplasty preceded by ultrasound is any better for heart attack patients ..

Why not "was"???

What do u think guys OA is correct?

I derived the same answer, so I definitely think it's correct.

We already started new clause with conjunction 'but', so 'that' is absolutely redundant here!

Reseach was conducted in the past, but 'balloon angioplasty preceded by ultrasound' is better in the past and present.

Past: balloon angioplasty was better (until sth. new is invented)
Present: balloon angioplasty is better (still nothing is better)

what about the clauses when we use it with the conjunction 'and'? In that case, we look for parallelism "and that". Why in that case 'that' is not redundant?

i have the same doubt as above...and was actually inclined towards option D

IMO:
In D, "determined that" makes it in a subjunctive mood, so usage of 'was' is not correct.

None of the answer choices are perfect:

A. "Preceded with" is wrong. Should be "preceded by"
"was or was not" unidiomatic, wordy and awkward.
B. "Whether or not" is redundant and hence wrong on the GMAT. Whether should suffice.
"For determining" is wrong. It should be "to determine"
C. The use of "that" is avoidable but doesnt make the construction wrong. the best among the given options
D. "Preceded with" is wrong. Should be "preceded by"
E. "For determining" is wrong. It should be "to determine"
"is or is not" unidiomatic, wordy and awkward.

See this:

nice explanation!!
http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/post1993.html#p1993
summary:
C is the best.
- 'but that' is correct for parallelism.
- to determine
- preceded by

Also something useful for "conjunction +that"

but here is conujction and not cordinating conjunction..so it is use to show contrat.....to work as coordinating conjunction it(but) must come after comma.....

In option B, use of "whether or not" is perfectly correct. Option C is incorrect because the result of " balloon angioplasty preceded by ultrasound" is comparted with the procedure "balloon procedure by itself". Where as the intent was to compare result of 1'st with the result of 2'nd so "is" should be present after than.
So the answer should be "B"

Well i would like to look at it this way....

repeated usage of 'that' ruins the chances of c d e. " researchers agreed that......but that ....." unecessary usage !!!!

its either A or B. In A was or was not isnt the correct usage,!

In B whether or not is used but its the right usage......if u have two options usageof whether is perfectly acceptable!!!

C. that more research was needed to determine whether balloon angioplasty preceded

D. that more research was needed to determine that balloon angioplasty preceded
with
ultrasound was any better for heart attack patients than
E. that more research was needed for determining that balloon angioplasty preceded
by ultrasound is or is not any better for heart attack patients than is

"preceded by" is correct idiom, hence eliminate A & D.
"needed to determine" is correct idiom, hence eliminate B & E.

I picked C for an answer, but I'm still having doubt whether C may contain the inconsistent tense with its "is"?
I know that I am not supposed to question the OA, but could someone kindly advise why we are fine with "is" in option C?
