Researchers have found that one in five patients hospitalized for heart attack experiences a major depression. According to the cardiologists who conducted the research, the depressed patients are 55 percent more likely than other heart attack patients to need hospital care for a heart problem again within a year and three times as likely to die from a future attack or other heart-related conditions.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must be true?

(A) If a person dies of a heart attack, there is a high probability that he may have been suffering from depression as well.
(B) If a patient needs to be re-hospitalised for a heart related problem within a year of his earlier heat attack, it is very likely that he may be suffering from depression.
(C) There are some similarities between symptoms of depression and symptoms of a heart attack in a patient.
(D) Depressed people are more likely to die of a heart attack than are people who do not suffer from depression.
(E) Suffering from a heart attack can lead to depression in some people.

1/5 of those hospitalized for heart attack experience major depression.

depressed are 55% more likely than other heart attack patient to be re-hospitalized within a year.

now answer choice A and B follow the conditional statement structure (Sufficient leading to necessary).

If x then y
not y then not x.

If a patient is not likely to be suffering from depression, he does not need be re-hospitalized for a heart problem within a year of his earlier heart attack. That is the only one that holds true.

If a patient has a low probability of suffering from depression, he does not die from heart-attack. << can we interpret this from the argument? no.

Hi,

Please explain how can we eliminate option E. I was confused between B and E.

Thanks in advance and kudos for explanation. :)

Hey Anurag,

(E) Suffering from a heart attack can lead to depression in some people - There is no causal relationship between heart attack and depression mentioned anywhere in the passage. While this MAY be true, this definitely NEED NOT be true. Hence this can be eliminated.

Cheers!

Took 3 mins :(

Here is my take though

Researchers have found that one in five patients hospitalized for heart attack experiences a major depression. According to the cardiologists who conducted the research, the depressed patients are 55 percent more likely than other heart attack patients to need hospital care for a heart problem again within a year and three times as likely to die from a future attack or other heart-related conditions.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must be true?

(A) If a person dies of a heart attack, there is a high probability that he may have been suffering from depression as well.
Explanation: Not every person who die because of heart attack suffer from depression. Only 1/5 patients suffer from depression and therefore we cannot conclude that depression has equal weightage in the death although depressed patients are 3 times more likely to die from any future attacks - INCORRECT

(B) If a patient needs to be re-hospitalised for a heart related problem within a year of his earlier heat attack, it is very likely that he may be suffering from depression.
Explanation: This is the case of 1/5 patients. We can infer from the passage that depressed patients are 55% more likely than other patients to need hospital care for heart attack. Therefore it is very likely that most of the patients who needs to be re-hopitalised are suffering from depression. - CORRECT

(C) There are some similarities between symptoms of depression and symptoms of a heart attack in a patient.
Explanation: IRRELEVANT

(D) Depressed people are more likely to die of a heart attack than are people who do not suffer from depression.
Explanation: IRRELEVANT

(E) Suffering from a heart attack can lead to depression in some people.
Explanation: True but "some people" is a vague figure. Some can refer to 1/5 or 3/5 and so forth but this cannot be inferred from the given question. - INCORRECT

Hence IMO B

Please feel free to correct me if my justifications are incorrect. :)

Thank you
Arjun
