Responding to negative reactions to an internal memorandum discouraging use of the word Chevy, General Motors moved on Thursday to explain its strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued the popular nickname for Chevrolet.

(A) General Motors moved on Thursday to explain its strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued
(B) General Motors moved on Thursday to explain their strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued
(C) General Motors employees had moved on Thursday to explain their strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued
(D) a move was made on Thursday to explain General Motors’ strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued
(E) a move was made on Thursday to explain General Motors’ strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued

Who will respond? A move? No. Hence it should be either A, B or C.

B - use of their with General Motors is wrong.
C - had moved is not correct tense used here.

IMO - A

Could someone explain the part of the sentence :"General Motors moved on Thursday", its meaning and its usage?

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

Correct Answer: (A)

Solution: All of the answer choices introduce either Pronoun or Modifier errors into the original sentence. “General Motors” is singular because it names a single company. Thus pronouns referring to General Motors should also be singular (“its” and “it”). Answers (B) and (C) are incorrect because they use the plural “their” and “they.” “Responding to …Chevy” is a modifier and should be immediately followed the entity that is responding to negative reactions: General Motors. Eliminate options (D) and (E) because they transform a correct modifer to an incorrect modifier (and introduce a passive construction in the process).

Responding to negative reactions to an internal memorandum discouraging use of the word Chevy, General Motors moved on Thursday to explain its strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued the popular nickname for Chevrolet.

(A) General Motors moved on Thursday to explain its strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued -->Correct

(B) General Motors moved on Thursday to explain their strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued -->Pronoun error. Their cannot refer to "General Motors". It is the name signified by Capital initial letters of both words.

(C) General Motors employees had moved on Thursday to explain their strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued -->had moved is incorrect. No need for past perfect here.

(D) a move was made on Thursday to explain General Motors’ strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued-->A move is not responding

(E) a move was made on Thursday to explain General Motors’ strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued -->A move is not responding

Explanation:

A-Logically and gramatically correct. Nothing wrong with this option.Proper modifier placement to explain opening phrase and pronoun referrant is also clear.

B- pronoun error (Gen.Motors is being talked as a company hence singular pronoun 'it'is right rather than plural'they')

C- this option is changing the meaning.Ques stem says "it was the company ( not its employees) that responded to internal MOU

D-straightforwardly incorrect -modifier error, the modifier phrase "Responding to.....word Chevy" is a noun modifier and needs a subject(Gen Motors) to whom it refers immediately next to it.
(Touch rule)

E- same as D ,due to modifier error.

Hence A is the correct answer.

Award kudos if you like the explanation.?

Re: Responding to negative reactions to an internal memorandum [#permalink]
Responding to negative reactions to an internal memorandum discouraging use of the word Chevy, General Motors moved on Thursday to explain its strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued the popular nickname for Chevrolet.

responding to bla bla is v+ing modifier, and it is modifying someone who can respond. Hence GM is a correctly placed just after comma.

Quote:
(D) a move was made on Thursday to explain General Motors’ strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued

(E) a move was made on Thursday to explain General Motors’ strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued

hence D and E are incorrect

Quote:
(A) General Motors moved on Thursday to explain its strategy and to reassure consumers that it still valued

Hold to A, as it seems clear.

Quote:
(B) General Motors moved on Thursday to explain their strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued

GM is singular, hence, their is incorrect.
B is out

Quote:
(C) General Motors employees had moved on Thursday to explain their strategy and to reassure consumers that they still valued

had usage is not needed.
C is out

A is clear win.
