Retake 710? [#permalink]

Hello,

I just took the GMAT, got a 710 (47Q, 40V) and was wondering if I should take it again based on my background:
- Asian American male
- 3.76 GPA from a top school (not Ivy)
- 2 years bulge bracket investment banking
- 2 years large private equity
- Applying to top 5 schools

Would a 740+ change my odds at HBS/GSB/Wharton? Thanks.

Hi,

You have a decent GMAT score. With 4+ yrs. of work experience, you are in an ideal phase of your career which most of the b-schools look for. To be able to convert your chances in H/S/W, I would suggest you to write strong application essays and work hard on interviews. Answer to the questions like how an MBA from … b-school would help you to achieve your goals, how would you contribute to the b-school society, what is your leadership style and achievements can make a difference.

Let me know if you require any assistance in selection of b-schools or profile evaluation. You may PM your details to have discussion in length.

Regards
Erina

Congrats on your GMAT score. Speaking from experience, it really is a personal decision whether to retake. 710 is a good enough score for those school but not outstanding. However, it is up to decide whether to retake based on whether you feel like you under performed on the day. If you were consistently scoring higher in practice tests then it may be worth it. Time is with you in this case as well. As for your work experience, it looks outstanding so with the right execution you are definitely in play for those schools with or without the retake.

I was in a similar situation as I scored a 710. I was originally going to forget about a retake and stick with 710. However I was a bit unhappy about my score and eventually booked in a retake and scored a 740. Whether it will make a difference to my candidacy it remains to be seen. But it definitely helped with my "what ifs" on the GMAT front and put it to bed.

Thanks to the responses above. Domo, I'm in the same boat as you. I feel like it wouldn't hurt to study a little bit more and potentially erase the "what ifs" when I apply. I know I can do better, but my results have been incredibly sporadic (sometimes high Q, low V, other times the opposite). I've been gearing up for another go, but I doubt at this point that my score will increase dramatically when I retake in a few weeks.
