C for me.

A: clause following "there was..." looks like an independent clause which is incorrect.
B: pronoun reference is not required, also 'denounced with exile' sounds strange, is it possible?
D: not parallel
E: makes a bit sense since it clearly says that duke was first denounced and then exiled..though i will go with C for simplicity.
