Hi All,

Following my initial post HERE, I have made significant strides in my study plan; however, I am yet to sit another test.

I've decided to create this log to document my journey and become more socially accountable. Once I set my mind to something I will strive to achieve it.

I'm going to keep each update brief and to the point, but before diving into the log updates it is important to note the following:

Background:
25 (just turned 26) year old manager in transactions (M&A) consulting in the big 4. My intention is to step overseas next year into an MBA (LBS/Stanford specifically). Long-term vision is to break into either UK/USA markets, move upstream and learn about M&A deal strategy, finance and valuation; then, bring this experience back with me to Australia - a much smaller market (deal size is nothing compared to UK/US). End goal for me is to expand on the niche M&A service offering I service in Australia and start my own firm potentially bringing together some close colleagues of mine who are looking to do something similar.

Per my initial post (linked above), I sat one MGMAT practice test and scored low - I did not study one bit before taking this test.

Target exam date: Late July (week beginning 24th July)

Resources:
[*]Economist GMAT
[*]MGMAT self-study kit (all the guides) + Foundations books + Advanced Quant
[*]Official Guide 2017

Adjustments to lifestyle since starting preparation:
[*]Partying less on weekends and seeing family less (live out of home)
[*]Communicated upfront with work to manage my commitments
[*]Going to the gym less (hitting 2-3 times a week still) and supplementing with walks
[*]Generally my mentality has changed quite a bit - definitely feels more isolated
[*] Wake up early (5:30am most weekdays) and get to work approximately 7am then knock off 1 hour study.

First update - 15/04/17 - Log Capture 1 attached.
Accumulated approximately 112 hours study as at time of typing:
- 40-50 hours across Economist GMAT and sitting at 32.5% Quant + 30.1% Verbal completion + 2 tutoring sessions
- Completed the following MGMAT books:
- Foundations of Math (end-to-end) including all Qs
- MGMAT Sentence Correction (one last chapter to dust off + a few outstanding questions)
- MGMAT FDPs (end-to-end)
- Number Properties (50% completed)

Commentary:
- work commitments have been ramping up significantly; have had to travel overseas for work and on weekends.
- best available time for me to study has been in the mornings through the week and on the weekends
- MGMAT guides take a shit load of time to get through but I feel they give good, detailed and deeper explanations of concepts than Economist (thus far)
- Weakness is definitely DS, specifically number properties (really really found this different and harder for me to apply a systematic approach to)
- approximately 99 days until target exam date.

Do you have a testing plan in place? That will help you better track how far you are from (or how close you are to) your target score of 720.

I do not unfortunately. How do you recommend I implement one?

Put a list of tests together and decide on a start date and frequency. For example, you could pick up (at least) 4 GMATPreps, along with a few other tests from prep companies. Aim to start testing intensively at least 1.5 months before your GMAT and take a test (or two, if you can) every week. Taking a test now would also be useful, as it'll give you much more information than tracking the total number of hours you've spent studying will. That is, if there is any course correction to be made, it is your tests that will let you know about that and help you stay on track.

13/06 - Update
Sat a practice test and bombed out at 500.
The reality of this score is that I know what i'm capable of now and not on the exam day in 2 months.
My approach has been all wrong and it's hurtful to have sunk now over 160+ hours (notwithstanding the life choices and sacrifices i've made).
I've only been covering the core content and not in the most efficient manner possible. I split my time across MGMAT and Economist simulatenously when I should have covered one then moved to OG 2017 Guide.

This is now my approach.

Hi dcummins,

After taking each practice CAT, you should plan to do a full review of your performance, with the goal of trying to define WHY you got questions wrong. While working through a full Mistake Tracker/Error Log will include far more detailed work, there are some basic questions that you should look to answer:

After reviewing each section, how many questions did you get wrong....
1) Because of a silly/little mistake?
2) Because there was some math/verbal that you just could not remember how to do?
3) Because the question was too hard?
4) Because you were low on time and had to guess?
5) In the Verbal section, how many questions did you 'narrow down to 2 choices' but still get wrong?

Thanks EMPOWERgmatRichC,

I'm just shy of 2 months out. I have a bit more content to cover now - how do you think I study from here on in?

Hi dcummins,

The questions that I asked about your last CAT were not 'rhetorical'; we have to define WHY you're getting questions wrong so that we can design a plan that will focus on the things that you need to do to improve. Thus, if you're looking for specific advice, then you'll need to provide exact answers to those questions first.

I liked the tracker you have built. Probably you should add few more factors(gym/travel/rejuvenation etc.) to it also just to see which ones are the biggest time snatchers.

I could do that but i know what takes up those hours i need. It's work and having friends over. I sacrificed the gym and other outlets.
