So I was thinking today about salaries in some of the major cities that we all might end up at after school, NY, California (SF and LA), Chicago, Boston, and Houston, and it got me thinking about my future paycheck. I had found this interesting website previously http://www.paycheckcity.com that has a paycheck calculator. I put in 10% of salary for 401(k) and $25 per bi-weekly paycheck for healthcare. It was pretty interesting how much more it costs to live in NYC and California vs. Chicago and Houston BEFORE even factoring in the cost of living adjustments. Making roughly$185,000 a year in salary, it would cost you $17,500 a year in taxes to live in NYC vs Houston, and$12,500 to live in NYC vs Chicago. I attached the spreadsheet if you're interested. Feel free to add more cities if you like.

Wow, Boston ranks a lot better than I thought it would.

I punched in North Carolina (lots of biotechs there) and got:

Biweekly: $3,905.40 Yearly:$101,540.40

I assume you filed as "single" and exempted the 401(k) and health insurance from everything?

If so, NC isn't much better than CA, which is pretty surprising!
