Salmonella is a food-borne microorganism that can cause intestinal illness. The illness is sometimes fatal, especially if not identified quickly and treated. Conventional Salmonella tests on food samples are slow and can miss unusual strains of the microorganism. A new test identifies the presence or absence of Salmonella by the one piece of genetic material common to all strains. Clearly, public health officials would be well advised to replace the previous Salmonella tests with the new test.

Which one of the following, if true, most substantially weakens the argument?

(A) The new test identifies genetic material from Salmonella organisms only and not from similar bacteria.
(B) The new test detects the presence of Salmonella at levels that are too low to pose a health to people.
(C) Salmonella is only one of a variety of food-borne microorganism that can cause intestinal illness.
(D) The new test has been made possible only recently by dramatic advances in biological science.
(E) Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning are often mistaken for those of other common intestinal illness.

explanation:

A) The new test identifies genetic material from Salmonella organisms only and not from similar bacteria. (other bacteria is out of context)
(B) The new test detects the presence of Salmonella at levels that are too low to pose a health to people. (it can be detected in low levels, but what about other levels?)
(C) Salmonella is only one of a variety of food-borne microorganism that can cause intestinal illness. (just a description obout salmonell and nothing to do with the question)
(D) The new test has been made possible only recently by dramatic advances in biological science. (additional information)
(E) Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning are often mistaken for those of other common intestinal illness. (Additonal info out of context)

I would choose B, because all other answers are irrelevant.

This is the kind of question that bothers me a little morally...if a health official were not to use a test that detects a fatal bacteria before it becomes harmfull (since we know that the bacteria will then reproduce) that would be a bad thing. That response does not weaken, but rather, strengthen the argument...but alas this is the GMAT, and since the bacteria is not harmfull at the time of testing, it is a good weakening argument.

Why should we be worried about bird flu at all...if it does not pass from bird to human.
