Is a sentence, such as the one below, wrong if I omit "that"?

I don't think most clothing designers realized that they had a significant following among those in the southern region.

Why or why not?

Somewhere I read that the 'words of thinking' (e.g. theory, believe, belief, etc..) must be followed by 'that'.
"Lucy's belief that the Earth is flat is great' (correct)
"Lucy's belief of..." (wrong)
"Lucy believes that..." (correct)

I don't have the source, as I got it from one of the many documents that I've read since I started studying for the Gmat... I would be interested in getting a more comprehensive explanation though...

'that' here is used as a conjunction joining the two clauses.

they had a significant following among those in the southern region - Main Clause (or independent ) because this part of sentence makes sense alone.

I don't think most clothing designers realized - Dependent clause coz this part does not makes sense alone.

Two clauses are joined by conjunction and that is was 'that' is doing here.

"I don't think most clothing designers realized they had a significant following among those in the southern region. "

The above sentence would be wrong because the clauses are not joined by conjunction.

Please feel free to comment if I am missing anything.

It’s the case of subjective mode

Hopes ,proposal ,desire and request always need that to introduce a clause
In these types of sentences there is a degree of uncertainty as to whether or not the second person will actually do what is asked.

It’s urgent that she goes to a doctor (but its all her will)

My advice is that you should finish exploring C before the placements starts (again it’s up to the guy)

Subjective is formed with the word that+infinitive form of verb (with out to)

Use of subjective follows the words and phrases such as

Apache ..a small doubt,

should it not be - it is urgent that she go to a doctor ?

Also, if we consider the original sentence to be a case of subjunctive mood, then which is the infinitive we are playing with ?
