I chose C. If you don't mind, please tell us what is the source for this interesting question?

I can't understand half of the others. This one is simple, easy to understand. modifying phrases are placed correctly.

IMO E.

I was confused between A and E. however.. of the great eruption of Vesuvius in two letters to the historian Tacitus.. in A is not clear . 'wrote in two letters' or 'eruption of Vesuvius in two letters '

E is clear.

I'm not sure spriya, but to me, in E, 'In two letters to the historian Tacitus' looks to be modifying 'the great eruption of Vesuvius.'
