Will go with B.

C/E - "end" doesnot seem right here.
D - for that is unidiomatic.
A - without "has" ....... the clauses dont look independent as should be the case because of the conjuction "and"

Picking C.
I'm not sure of the idiom "to that end". Might be correct but C seems alright apart from that.
Some explainations on the idiom might prove helpful if indeed it is an idiom.

It's among A, C and E.
IMO "to that end" is correct.
So going with E.

I will go with E here... if A said "to do so" I would have picked A...

Good one.. I was hoping to see "to do so"..

Forced to choose between C and E. Choosing C.. "Such an end"..
I think "that" and "it" have ambigous reference unless "that an end" is an idiom..

Does anyone else think that the not-underlined portion of the sentence is not gramatically correct?

Schliemann determined at the age of seven to find...? Isn't that missing a verb or something. 'Schliemann [became] determined', or 'at the age of seven [that he would] find?

I don't even want to attempt an answe because I'm not sure I can properly match it to the first part.

E.

The original sentence says devoted. This implies simple past. B and D out because they change the tense to present perfect, implying that S is still doing so.

C is out, because to such an end does not mean the same as to that very end. Shift in meaning...out.

between A and E now.
E simply sounds like the correct idiom.

Don't even try to think this. Just do the job that GMAT requires.

Yes, I think a verb is required at the beginning:

Schliemann WAS determined at the age of seven to find the site of ancient Troy and devoted his subsequent career to that end.

Anyhow, the non-underlined portion frequently contains errors..

Very late, but (E)
