Re: Science and observation indicate that auroras, such as those seen in [#permalink]
+1 C

Science and observation indicate that auroras, such as those seen in the Arctic and Antarctic, appears in various configurations that are shaped by the earth’s magnetic field.

As we go through the Options We have Appear Vs Appears Split

auroras, such as those seen in the Arctic and....

Quote:
So we definitely need Plural S-V agreement

So, Appear will be Correct Verb

This narrows down to C and D

D) In which Those is not clear to which it is referring to Configurations/ Auroras ?

Correct Answer is C hence and That correctly modifies Configurations

A. Antarctic, appears in various configurations that are shaped
B. Antarctic appears in various configurations in which those are shaped
C. Antarctic, appear in various configurations that are shaped
D. Antarctic appear in various configurations in which those are shaped
E. Antarctic, shaped in various configurations as those

Science and observation indicate that auroras, such as those seen in the Arctic and Antarctic, appears in various configurations that are shaped by the earth’s magnetic field

A. Antarctic, appears in various configurations that are shaped
auroras such as Arctic appears -> Sub/verb agreement error - so eliminate A & B

B. Antarctic appears in various configurations in which those are shaped
auroras such as Arctic appears -> Sub/verb agreement error - so eliminate A & B

C. Antarctic, appear in various configurations that are shaped
auroras such as Arctic appear -> Sub/verb agreement ; configurations that are shaped -> sub/verb agrees

D. Antarctic appear in various configurations in which those are shaped
this options suggests configurations in which 'those' ? those means aurora's those seen in Arctic, those specific ones. sentence does not intend to indicate that

E. Antarctic, shaped in various configurations as those
there is no verb in the sentence

C is the answer!

Errors Tested: Subject-verb agreement, Verb, and Meaning.
Main Error Type: Subject-verb agreement. The main error, S-V agreement helps eliminate options A and B.
Verb: Option E lacks a main verb and is therefore a sentence fragment.

A. Antarctic, appears in various configurations that are shaped
Subject-verb agreement error: Auroras is plural and hence must have plural verb, appear.

B. Antarctic appears in various configurations in which those are shaped
Subject-verb agreement error: Auroras is plural and hence must have plural verb, appear.
Meaning: The configurations are shaped by earth's the earth’s magnetic field. "In which those" is awkward and "those" does not have a clear antecedent.
Punctuation: Antarctic must be followed by a comma in order to close the comma pair used to separate the non-essential modifier "such as those seen in the Arctic and Antarctic".

C. Antarctic, appear in various configurations that are shaped
No error: All grammar and meaning issues in other choices are fixed in option C.

D. Antarctic appear in various configurations in which those are shaped

E. Antarctic, shaped in various configurations as those
Verb: Past participle, shaped, cannot function as a verb; as written, the sentence lacks a main verb and hence is a fragment.
Meaning: The configurations are shaped by earth's the earth’s magnetic field. The phrase, as those, changes the meaning.

Well done, DisciplinedPrep!

By focusing mainly on subject-verb agreement, you were able to knock out 3 options rather quickly, and the other 2 were easier to pick apart! This method will absolutely make the SC portion of the GMAT easier to tackle!

Kudos to you!

Well done, LoneSurvivor!

By focusing on the appear/appears split first, you were able to narrow down your choices quickly to just 2! Using this method will make the SC portion of the GMAT run smoothly for sure!

Well done, snoep!

You cracked the code on this question! By focusing your time on subject-verb agreement and looking out for vague pronouns, you were able to (hopefully) answer this quickly! This method will make the SC portion of the GMAT go smoothly!

Block 1, Question 3

A. Antarctic, appears in various configurations that are shaped (SV disagreement. "Auroras appear" is the correct version)
B. Antarctic appears in various configurations in which those are shaped (SV disagreement. "Auroras appear" is the correct version. "THOSE" is also incorrect and should be replaced by "THEY")
C. Antarctic, appear in various configurations that are shaped (Correct Version)
D. Antarctic appear in various configurations in which those are shaped (There should be a comma after ANTARTIC as appear is describing AURORAS and not ARCTIC & ANTARTIC)
E. Antarctic, shaped in various configurations as those (This is not a sentence as there is no Verb for AURORAS. The last line SHAPED IN .......... is a modifier)

So in my opinion C should be the correct answer.

Well done, Shivan21!

You cracked the code on this question! By focusing on the appear/appears split, you were able to eliminate a lot of options pretty quickly! Once you've done that, the last couple options are a lot easier to figure out!

Kudos to you!
