Scientists are currently trying to determine the extent of the shift of tectonic places from their previous positions by earthquakes and other similar phenomena.

Is this sentence correct? Kaplan says a verb is missing but what about "determine"? I know shift is not a verb, but dies it have to be since we already have one? Isn't rather their ambiguous?

Another sentence in Kaplans guide is
Those who have visited the Grand Canyon have typically seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, whose different colors mark the passage of time like rings in a tree trunk.

Is "whose" ambiguous? I'd say no because it follows Grand Canyon directly. Or does this rule only apply to which?

Edit 3: Wow this Kaplan guide is crappy. KAPLAN says "It was the anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that led to the discovery of Neptune" is correct. What about the "It was"...? Shouldn't that be plural?

THX!
