Re: Scientists examining [u]the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk foo [#permalink]
Answer is A because:
Scientists have found something. Everything else is correct in this sentence.

In B & C: Scientists examining and found are not parallel

In D & E: There is a meaning change. Scientists didn't examine the rats while they were eating junk food.

Scientists examining the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops in utero, not through learned behavior.

(A) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops

(B) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food and found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop - 1. No verb for scientists in this sentence

Re: Scientists examining [u]the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk foo [#permalink]
Scientists examining the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops in utero, not through learned behavior.

My Answer -> A

FACT 1-> The sentence should end with develops as we are talking about propensity and that's singular. So, B and D are out.
FACT 2->Scientists who are examining .... found out .... . Saying that there are 2 activities examining and found is wrong. Option C is out.
FACT 3-> The propensity develops slowly, as the alternate option is learned behavior . This means that this is a habit/pattern and not an event. So Option E is out.

(A) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops

(B) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food and found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop

(C) the body fat of pregnant rats eating junk food and found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops

(D) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop

(E) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops

Re: Scientists examining [u]the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk foo [#permalink]
I would go for A.

B. Meaning Error
C. Verb missing - parallelism error
D & E 'while eating junk food' is incorrectly modifying 'scientists examining'.

Scientists examining the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops in utero, not through learned behavior.

(A) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops - Correct - It is clear that Scientists have found something . who correctly modifies the rats . Have found can't refer to rats as its in possessive form .

(B) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food and found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop - REJECT . scientists did only one action . examining and found are not ll action in this case .

(C) the body fat of pregnant rats eating junk food and found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops - REJECT -scientists did only one action . examining and found are not ll action in this case .

(A) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops

A looks fine at a first glance. Let’s keep A and proceed with the POE.

(B) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food and found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop

Option B puts “examining”, which is a modifier parallel to found. This is incorrect.

(C) the body fat of pregnant rats eating junk food and found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops

This options makes the similar mistake as in B. This puts “examining”, which is a modifier parallel to found. This is incorrect.

(D) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop

This option changes the meaning of the sentence. This option suggests that the scientists are examining the pregnant rat’s body fat at the time when this rats are eating junk foods.

Re: Scientists examining [u]the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk foo [#permalink]
Scientists examining the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops in utero, not through learned behavior.

(A) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops -

(i) the action of 'examination' happens after the action of 'eating'. Hence, the usage of 'examining' and 'ate' is correct.
(ii) the 'finding' has implications that are active in the present moment. Hence, the usage of 'have found' (present perfect) is correct here.
(iii) the verb 'develops' (a singular verb) is commanded by the subject 'propensity' (which is a singular subject). We have perfect subject-verb agreement here.

Hence, for the reasons cited above, (A) is the right answer choice.

(B) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food and found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop - there's a parallelism error here. Hence, eliminate (B)

(C) the body fat of pregnant rats eating junk food and found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops - this suggests that the actions 'examining' and 'eating' are happening simultaneously; the simultaneity of these events does not make any sense. Hence, eliminate (C)

(D) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop - According to (D), the scientists were examining the rat's body fat while eating junk food. (LOL). this changes the intended meaning of the sentence. Hence, eliminate (D).

(E) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops - Same error as described in (D). hence, eliminate (E).

Scientists examining the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops in utero, not through learned behavior.

Highlighted part is what's wrong in the sentence.

(A) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices - Correct

(B) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food and found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop - Incorrect - "and" should be replaced with have. Also Propensity (singular) - develop is correct verb.

(C) the body fat of pregnant rats eating junk food and found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops - Incorrect - same error as B.

(D) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop - Incorrect - as it wrongly refers to the Scientists and no the pregnant rats.

(E) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops - Incorrect, reasoning same as B.

Re: Scientists examining [u]the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk foo [#permalink]
Scientists examining the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops in utero, not through learned behavior.

The answer choice is correct.

(A) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food have found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops

(B) the body fat of pregnant rats who ate junk food and found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop- this choice incorrectly uses the word 'and', changing the meaning of the sentence. The core of the sentence is that a particular group of scientists has found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops in utero, not through learned behavior. The subject of the sentence is scientists and the verb is 'have found'- using 'and' removes this verb. 'And' shows that two separate phenomena have occurred but this is not the case.

(C) the body fat of pregnant rats eating junk food and found that the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops- Incorrect- Same as (B)

(D) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity to make poor post-weaning food choices to develop- the choice incorrectly indicates that the scientists were examining the body fat of pregnant rats while the rats were eating junk food ( that is- at the same time). This is not logical- it could also mean that the scientists were eating junk food while examining the rats. Also, 'to develop' is not correct.

(E) pregnant rats' body fat while eating junk food have found the propensity for making poor post-weaning food choices develops- Similar to choice (D)- this answer is incorrect
