Is this really an Economist q? It's very oddly formal, especially since it also chooses to bring in the un-GMAT-like topic of sex ed.

In any case, I'm assuming there's supposed to be a semicolon after "adolescents," at least in the correct answer. Otherwise they all die by comma splice!

Is 'creates' not the right verb to use, as reference is to 'sex'?

Thanks

"create" goes with "that" which modifies noun immediately before it, this word is "topics", so plural

In "One of the X that Y.. " format, the verb in Y should be in agreement with X. Here topics is plural and hence Y should have plural verb - create.

himanshumalhotra1990, there's no clear rule to force the use of "matter" vs. "matters." It really depends on the intended meaning. The plural would make the most sense if all the "matters" were likely to come up at once. For instance, as in "During the interview, we will address any questions you may have." The idea is that you may have multiple questions, and we'll answer all of them. In this SC sentence, we don't need that plural. The singular would work fine, since the meaning is that any matter we think of can be discussed. The idea that there is more than one possible matter to discuss makes no difference.

So I agree that "matter" is better here, but not absolutely necessary. We don't need the plural, but that doesn't automatically make it wrong (especially since it appears in all the choices). Then again, this is the risk we run up against when practicing with questions of dubious origin. We can end up studying constructions that might not appear on the GMAT.

I don't see a semi-colon in the question on the website.

QS: Sex is one of the topics that creates a great amount of confusion amongst adolescents, therefore psychologists recommend that parents transcend any discomfort and institute an open and reassuring setting in which any matters can be discussed.

A: creates a great amount of confusion amongst adolescents, therefore psychologists recommend that parents transcend any discomfort and institute an open and reassuring setting in which any matters can be discussed

B: create a great amount of confusion amongst adolescents, therefore psychologists recommend that parents transcend any discomfort and institute an open and reassuring setting in which the discussion of any matters can take place

C: create a great amount of confusion amongst adolescents, therefore psychologists recommend that parents will transcend any discomforts and institute an open, reassuring setting in which any matters can be discussed

D: create much confusion amongst adolescents, therefore psychologists recommend that parents transcend any discomfort and institute an open and reassuring setting in which any matters can be discussed

E: create a great amount of confusion amongst adolescents, therefore psychologists recommend that parents transcended any discomfort and institute an open and reassuring setting in which any matters can be discussed

OE:

The relative clause that creates a great amount of confusion amongst adolescents describes the noun that appears immediately before it, namely, topics. This answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause error by using the plural verb create to match the plural subject topics.

So it's really from the Economist? Odd. Well, they definitely need to add a semicolon. You can't join two independent clauses with a comma!

'Therefore' gives a dependent clause. So no need for semi-colon. Right?

No, "therefore" doesn't create a dependent clause. "So" would work, but not "therefore." It's true that "therefore" builds on what was said previously, so we're not likely to see it at the beginning of an SC sentence. However, in real writing, it's normal to see "therefore" introducing an independent clause. In fact, this often happens at the end of a CR argument.

why is 'create a great amount of confusion' wrong? I thought much, less, little, least, amount, and great are all able to refer to an uncountable subject, which here is topics. can you please clarify? Thanks!

I narrowed it down to B or D. Any matters in D threw me off.
