Since digital recording offers essentially perfect reproduction – on compact discs, digital audiotapes, or digital videodiscs – audiophiles can accumulate music, transferring them from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging the sound quality. (GMAT Prep)
1. music, transferring them from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging-pronoun ambiguity “them”
2. music, transferring it from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and no damage to -We can alter music after coping of music, the action copying should be completed a completed action
3. music, transfer it from one format to another, copy it, and digitally alter it with little effort and no damage to - correct

4. music and transfer it from one format to another, copy it, and then digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging- “then digitally altering” is awkward
5. music and transfer it from one format to another, copying it, and digitally alter it with little effort and no damage to-We can alter music after coping of music, the action copying should be a completed action

A) music, transferring them from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging
pronouns "them" does not agree with noun "music", lack of parallelism between "transferring them, copying it" "not damaging" is ankward

B) music, transferring it from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and no damage to
Not correct usage of ing-form inside the parallelism: there is an above parallel structure in the sentence between "accumulate music" and all the rest, which is not conveyed by the sentence in B. It seems that transferring is a way of accumulate music and the tense between accumulate and transferring, copying etc does not agree.

C) music, transfer it from one format to another, copy it, and digitally alter it with little effort and no damage to
Correct "above" parallel structure between accumulate and all the other verbs (transfer, copy, alter)

D) music and transfer it from one format to another, copy it, and then digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging
lack in parallelism between verbs "copy", "transfer" and "altering"

E) music and transfer it from one format to another, copying it, and digitally alter it with little effort and no damage to
problems in paralellism which is shifting between "transfer" present tense , "copying" ing-form, "alter", present tense

Kudos if you find this post helpful. I do really need them!!!!

C because here all things are parallel in meaning and structure.

Not b, because accumulating music does not cause its transferring, copying or altering. If it were the case that the first one was leading to other things, b would have been correct.

I narrowed down to B & C. Good reasons given for eliminating B. Also what do you mean SVA issue?

C items are parallel.
D and E both have parallelism issue.

Hi Marcab,

I want you to study the following sentence:

Joe finished his project, working till late hours, skipping his gym sessions, and refusing to meet even his close friends.

Now if I turn this sentence into:

Joe finished his project, worked till late hours, skipped his gym sessions, and refused to meet even his close friends.

Do you think both the grammatically correct sentences mean the same and both are logical?
Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Would you mind Giving the Full explanation of the question?

@Carcass,

Your explanation is perfectly apt but the official answer denoted above is C.
This is wrong. It should be B.

For those who have doubt, if we consider the original sentence, it says that the the audiophiles can accumulate music in three steps :
- by transferring, copying & altering.
In most of the cases, the original sentence conveys the meaning. Considering it, B becomes the best choice.
C is grammatically correct, but distorts the meaning as per the context of the sentence.

Since digital recording offers essentially perfect reproduction – on compact discs, digital audiotapes, or digital videodiscs – audiophiles can accumulate vast collections of music, transferring them from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging the sound quality.

b. music, transferring it from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and no damage to

c. music, transferring them from one format to another, copy them, and digitally alter them with little effort and no damage to

First and foremost, we need to understand that
(with little effort and no damage to sound quality) is a complete adverbial modifier.
99% of the time -> usage of "with" would be in adverbial phrase and should modify verb.
Now what is the verb -> In option B it is "accumulate" in option C) it is "alter".
Now there are two things:
Transferring, copying, altering -> can modify accumulation. and Sound quality issue can come in the process of accumulation.
Now in option C) , there are 4 actions which are made parallel and sound quality is a issue in "only" altering. Why not copying/transferring/accumulating.
I will side with option B) more complete I guess.

Actually with this version of option C, it is easy to eliminate C, since them (plural pronoun) used in option C cannot refer to the intended antecedent music (singular Noun).

However, in this very thread, many other posts use it in option C. If someone can post a screen-print of this question from GMATPrep, that would help sort things out.

I think in the process of accumulation, you can transfer "collections of music".

Marcab has already posted the screen shot of the question here : since-digital-recording-offers-essentially-perfect-143996.html#p1154417

The question i came across was slightly different, with the same choices.

Since digital recording offers essentially perfect reproduction – on compact discs, digital audiotapes, or digital videodiscs – audiophiles can accumulate vast collections of music, transferring them from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging the sound quality.

music, transferring them from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging

music, transferring it from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and no damage to

music, transfer it from one format to another, copy it, and digitally alter it with little effort and no damage to

music and transfer it from one format to another, copy it, and then digitally altering it with little effort and not damaging

music and transfer it from one format to another, copying it, and digitally alter it with little effort and no damage to

I had a slight confusion. Would the subject be music or collections of music?

B is correct as accumulate music, transferring it from one format to another, copying it, and digitally altering it with little effort and no damage to- means that music can be accumulated by transferring, copying and digitally altering it with little effort and with no damage- notice altering has two parts 1. with little effort 2. with no damage
