Since Mayor Drabble always repays her political debts as soon as possible, she will almost certainly appoint Lee to be the new head of the arts commission. Lee has wanted that job for a long time, and Drabble owes Lee a lot for his support in the last election.
Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
(A) Mayor Drabble has no political debt that is both of longer standing than the one she owes to Lee and could as suitably be repaid by an appointment to be the new head of the arts commission.
(B) There is no one to whom Mayor Drabble owes a greater political debt for support in the last election than the political debt she owes to Lee.
(C) Lee is the only person to whom Mayor Drabble owes a political debt who would be willing to accept an appointment from her as the new head of the arts commission.
(D) Whether Lee is qualified to head the arts commission is irrelevant to Mayor Drabble’s decision.
(E) The only way that Mayor Drabble can adequately repay her political debt to Lee is by appointing him to head the arts commission.

E.

This is like y is caused by x and only x. Option E supports that the only way political debt can be cleared is by appointing Lee as the chairman of the Art Commission.

IMO A

Since Mayor Drabble always repays her political debts as soon as possible, she will almost certainly appoint Lee to be the new head of the arts commission. Lee has wanted that job for a long time, and Drabble owes Lee a lot for his support in the last election.
Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
(A) Mayor Drabble has no political debt that is both of longer standing than the one she owes to Lee and could as suitably be repaid by an appointment to be the new head of the arts commission -->negating the argument: she has a political debt that is longer standing than Lee's and could as suitably be repaid by an appointment to be the new head of the arts commission --> weaken the argument that she should pay for this debt before Lee's debt by assigning the debtor to that position
(B) There is no one to whom Mayor Drabble owes a greater political debt for support in the last election than the political debt she owes to Lee --> amount of debt is out of scope, this is about the length of the debt
(C) Lee is the only person to whom Mayor Drabble owes a political debt who would be willing to accept an appointment from her as the new head of the arts commission -->negating: there are many people to whom Mayor Drabble owes a political debt who would be willing to accept an appointment from her as the new head of the arts commission --> does not weaken
(D) Whether Lee is qualified to head the arts commission is irrelevant to Mayor Drabble’s decision -->irrelevant
(E) The only way that Mayor Drabble can adequately repay her political debt to Lee is by appointing him to head the arts commission -->negating: there are many ways that Mayor Drabble can adequately repay her political debt to Lee other than by appointing him to head the arts commission -->does not weaken the argument

Tough choice between A and E.. but i go with E.

If there are other ways of repaying the debt, the argument that she will almost certainly appoint mr.lee as the head will fall apart..

between E and A

my pick is A because of the wordings "she will almost certainly appoint Lee".

if we negate A then it means that there's a political debt other than lee's political debt that is of higher priority and if thats the case then why would she pay the debt of Lee. She should paying the other debt.

Actually I do not quite understand why E is not correct. I think both A and E can be an assumption.

A wins over E because

think of a case where in there are 2 persons and the debts for both can be repaid only by appointing them as head of arts commission. Which one would you choose?

Since the question stem says Drabble repays her loan ASAP, we need something to close this hole pertaining to time line( long standing debt first).

A, which addresses this issue, is the best one

Agreed with A....It fills all the gaps between the premise and the conclusion...
