I don't understand why Option C is correct and B,D are wrong. Please help
I'm not sure why no one is pointing out the possible usage error in the OA (C). Option C uses like to introduce a prepositional phrase (in many African countries) rather than a noun phrase. I'm not going to get into whether we should or should not restrict ourselves to noun phrases after like, but the GMAT has used that as the basis to mark options incorrect in the past.

I'd advise you to ignore this question.

IMO D.

Modifier that modifies Soccer is correctly placed before Soccer separated by a comma.

- Like cannot be followed by a clause, hence A and D out.
- "a most" is incorrect, we should use "the most", hence B out.
- Letter E changes the meaning, because it does not specify Cameroon, hence E out.

So, the correct answer is C.

"like" is used to compare nouns, so there shouldn't be a verb coming after "like". This gets rid of A and D, which have got the 'it is' (noun +verb).
B changes the original meaning - we need to the say 'the most popular', not just 'a popular'.
E also drops the 'in Cameroon", so this is also incorrect.
Additionally, in B and E, we seem to be comparing a sport (soccer) to a country (Cameroon), making for a nonsensical comparison.
This leaves us with C as our best answer - correct comparison and no verb after "like

I thought that in option C, "soccer is the most popular sport" part is a non essential modifier

The first comma is used to separate the introductory phrase. It is not part of the main clause that follows the comma. I fact, the main clause is - Soccer is the most …- If you remove that, then there is no clause at all.

A. Soccer is the most popular sport in Cameroon, like it is in many African countries

"like" is never followed by a clause INCORRECT

B. Soccer, like in many African countries, is a most popular sport in Cameroon

"like in many African countries" is modifying soccer which is INCORRECT

C. In Cameroon, soccer is the most popular sport, like in many African countries

D. Like it is in many African countries, soccer is the most popular sport in Cameroon

"like" is never followed by a clause INCORRECT

Meaning error. There is no mention of Cameroon. INCORRECT

Hence option C

But isn't it also true that like should not be followed by a prepositional phrase?
