A) "it" has no reference
B) "it" has no reference
C) Good flow, "do so" is good usage to indicate some action.
D) Awkward construction. "Socrates could have done so"...what?
E) "C" is better construction.

(A) Socrates could have fled from Athens after he was sentenced to death, but he refused to do it. ---> we should use "so" instead of "it" . because we refer to a verb not a noun.

(B) After he was sentenced to death, Socrates might have fled from Athens, but he refused to do it. ---> same as in A

(C) After he was sentenced to death, Socrates could have fled from Athens, but he refused to do so. ---> Correct

(D) Refusing to flee from Athens, Socrates could have done so after he was sentenced to death. ---> "so" refers to what ??

(E) Socrates could have fled from Athens but refused to after he was sentenced to death. ---> we need "so" after "refused to". moreover, this choice changes the meaning. it sounds as if he changed his mind to do so after he was sentenced !

(A) 'to do it' is incorrect
(B) 'might have fled from Athens' changes meaning of sentence. 'to do it' is incorrect
(C) After he was sentenced to death, Socrates could have fled from Athens, but he refused to do so.
(D) Awkward sentence
(E) Meaning of sentence changed

C is the best choice. Sentence is not disjointed. 'he' refers to Socrates and 'to do so' is correct.

(B) After he was sentenced to death, Socrates might have fled from Athens, but he refused to do it. -- might have means , there is no surety whether he could have fled or not-- meaning distorted
(C) After he was sentenced to death, Socrates could have fled from Athens, but he refused to do so. -- gramatically perfect and events are in order
(D) Refusing to flee from Athens, Socrates could have done so after he was sentenced to death. -- Tenses mismatch between both the events and events are not in correct order
(E) ]Socrates could have fled from Athens but refused to after he was sentenced to death.--Meaning changed,verb missing after refused to

(C) : CORRECT

(A) : Do it - not preferred + First condemned then escape

(B) : Do so is preferred

(D) : Wrong order

(E) : Same as (D) and (A)

refused to < DO WHAT>?

2. I expect verb after to , where is it?
to after xyz seems grammatically wrong.

but he refused to do it ("It" refer to Noun ambiguity, socrates or athens)

(B) After he was sentenced to death,
Socrates might have fled from Athens,
but he refused to do it ("It" refer to Noun ambiguity, socrates or athens)

(C) After he was sentenced to death,
Socrates could have fled from Athens,
but he refused to do so. ("So" is a adverb, modify verb "fled") Correct

(D) Refusing to flee from Athens,
Socrates could have done so
after he was sentenced to death.
Wrong: Flee - present tense, refusing - present participle, done so ?? what - meaning ambiguity,

(E) Socrates could have fled from Athens
but refused to
after he was sentenced to death - Meaning error - wrong
